Here's a thread for people who like to play with photo-editing programs a little too much, like myself. feel free to post your art, comments, etc. Thanks to Malcor for starting this forum. :D

this is a picture i took of one of my friends and then proceeded to "cartoonize" for lack of a better word.

yes, i agree, very cool. the first one is really nice, but in the second one i can't stop thinking that the person on the right just has a really hairy chest or something.

heh, that's interesting, i guess i never saw the 'hairy chest' thing beause 've seen the picture so many times, and also, i helped my friend pick out the shirt

glad you like, there's more to come, i just have to resize them for posting. and maybe get them off the computer at work. :D

this is, well i don't know if i shoudl tell you what it is, or let you try to figure it out. i'll let you guess. i think it's obvious, because i did it, but i never saw the hair chest before.... lol!

and i'll take a stab at guessing....to me it looks like someone's back, and they have some sort of tattoo. their head is turned a bit to our left, and they have some sort of necklace or something on as well.

heh, totally NF! i often do this stuff when i'm bored on my days off or else when i have nothing to do at work! if you PM me your pic, or email me, and give me a few days, i should be able to come up with something.

ooooh, is this open to anyone?

:D

Anita Blake
June 20th, 2003, 14:53
heh, sure, why not. like i said, i do this stuff when i'm bored, and i start feeling a little silly after a while of only doing pictures of myself. Though if you are going to all send me your pictures, i would set out some guidlines, such as

-send a good picture, nice closeup perhaps
- picture quality doesn't matter too much becuase i resize it and trace over it
- a picture with an attitude will be way cooler than a random snapshot that your dad's 2nd cousin's wife's sister took at that family reunion 12 years ago and... oh! there you are in the corner!
- the more contrasting colours, the more interesting
- and it should be a picture that you like, because otherwise, you'll probably not like the drawing. :D

anyway, PM me if you want one done, and i'll let you know how long it could possibly take (bear in mind that i am getting moved up to full time work soon, so i may have less 'bored time', or perhaps more.. lol ) ;)

cheers!

i use photoshop, but i just yesterday started to learn how to use illustrator... which is much more confusing and picky than photoshop, but has the nifty power of vector graphics... oooooh. :D

and i updated/improved upon the last picture, so here is the newer version

edit: but i'm still doing some more work on it

LaughingTurtle
June 26th, 2003, 20:24
Was bored today so I finally got around to trying my hand at it...what do yah think?

The hardest part was the actual face, nose, mouth (i cheated and didn't do the eyes :D ) I don't like the mouth at all. Argh! Probably just been spoiled by looking at Anita's lovely lips....damn! Heh, If I had the hood up in the original pic, after drawing it I bet i'd look like the unibomber

I might work more on the lighting/shading in the future but this was just an experimentation run through :)

June 27th, 2003, 20:09
Well I was bored today (again heh) and arch had just gotten some new pics scanned in so here's some more LT art.

I had done the original comic part of arch in color first but when I found a fitting background (it was b&w) so I made it b&w as well to fit, but then also made another copy where I colored a little of the background, thus the two copies.

well, you may have already seen this, but this is a picture i am particularly proud of, since it consists of 3 photographs which i have merged, i think rather successfully, to make one nicely framed composition.

OK, i just find my cats eye's hypnotic and wanted to share the feeling. :)

umm... this is my ...uh... visual representation of the City of Vancouver. ...uh.... yeah. :)

LaughingTurtle
July 21st, 2003, 22:43
Very nice...and how...erm....fitting for Vancouver :D

I think I might post up the cell shade I did most recently up in this forum that's in my pic profile cause here I can attach it full size

Also working on a new cell shade for my bro with his truck...have no clue when I'll have that finished cause I've never done a vehicle before

LaughingTurtle
July 25th, 2003, 18:38
Well it's been a few days, thought I might show some progress/update on my bro's picture. Still working on the sketch, so I have yet to even start the shading or coloring oy :broken:

NOTE: the original is 1600x1200, but the attached is only 800x600 so this mother is big heh

Anita Blake
July 26th, 2003, 13:01
wow, it looks very crisp and clean. i like the sharpness of the lines. it's almost like an ad for a chevy. :D

LaughingTurtle
August 1st, 2003, 23:41
Well finally finished it...color and all....argh I kinda hate putting this up in 800x600...it's regular dimensions is 1632x1232 so it loses a lot of detail and having to save it as a jpg loses quality. Oh well....first time doing a vehicle, and I'm proud of it. If anyone likes it and wants the full sized version let me know.

NOTE: the only part of the image I did not draw myself was the car lights or tires because they were giving me such a hard time to draw real like.

Haray! ...nice thread. I have *TONS* of stuff I can post here...everyone be *very* afriad!

Unfortunately, or fortunately (depending on how you look at it), I'm not on my computer just now, so...we'll have to settle with this one...which is a photo of the final project from my design class last semester. Even crazier, I created the painting from photoshop composition of a Hubble [telescope] photo, an earth shot from Shuttle [insert N.A.S.A. shuttle name here], and a picture of a human fetus in the womb (or perhaps a test tube). In short, its a of a painting of photo compostion.

Ok, now this will take a little introduction...

For those of you who are familiar with the Video Game Max Payne, you'll get this, for others, ummm yeah try and bear with me. Anywho, in the video game it sometimes moves the storyline along by showing noir style comic strips. Well after seeing some examples I deicded to "paynify" one of my roommates.

He's a computer programmer and well this is an inside joke with him about being an elite hacker ;) But then it's not the joke that I really want you to see but the Max Payne stylizing of the picture. If yah want I can easily explain how I did it, if you want to paynify things on your own.

Abraxas77
August 8th, 2003, 01:30

....i'm guessing photoshop's cutout filter and a bit of bluring. right?

Actually...the drybrush filter, tweaking opacity, and color saturation, quite simple.

everything is going well except for the faces, and fleshtones. gah. any recommendations for me?

LaughingTurtle
October 10th, 2003, 13:31
wb:
depends on the look you want. Because a cell shade (cartoon/anime style characterized with a black line outlining everything - what i've mostly tried to do) is created differently than say Anita's latest stylized pics. But in a more vague/general sense, through the magic of photoshop :D Though, admittedly, it's not the best program to use for drawings, but the best i got.

arch:
heh i'll let anita field that as I'm much better with inanimate objects than people :D ...not that i'm very good to begin with but that's besides the point ;)

WolfBrother
October 10th, 2003, 16:28
I mean like the very first one that Anita posted

Anita Blake
October 10th, 2003, 23:43
well, hmm, ok, the first ones that i posted i did a lot differently than the newer ones. Um, lessee, well, i did them all with PHotoshop 7. And in all of them i started with a base photograph. then i made other layers on which i did stuf like trace out the prominent lines in the photo, and then fill in the black lines with solid colours. different aspects of the photo (backgroun, foreground, middle ground, etc i put on different layers, and hen added varying blur filters.

the newer ones i just started a layer over the photo and used one of the funky watercolour paint brushes and chose whatever colour i thought would suit the picture and painted directly over top of the photo.

i don't know if any of that makes sense, but, yeah, that's the secret of my success ;) :p

WolfBrother
October 11th, 2003, 04:35
Yeah. You lost me. But I really liked the first one you did. Looks really good

sir archely
October 12th, 2003, 21:22
just curious, but how thick was the line you used to trace the edges? did you use brush or pencil?

also, i'm curious how LT did that effect in the pic of him with the turtle in front of the posters where the color is darker on the sides and lighter in the middle. (like on the shirt and face, iirc)

the fleshtones are stilling pissing me off.

also, there is a dog in my pic, and it looks really frigging messed up. heh. scary.

Anita Blake
October 13th, 2003, 02:59
i think in the early ones what i did was trace the lines out with the magnet tool thingy and then stroke the line, with whatever the stroke happened to use, which i think was usually pencil, but it looks better on brush. also it depends on how prominent and thick the line is as to what colour you use.

for flesh tone i usually go into the colour picker and grab something from the extremely pale end of orange. ~nods~

LaughingTurtle

Once again it all depends on the circumstances. I'll try to explain it as best I can though. The larger the pic, the bigger the line usually, though not necessarily, as sometimes you may want to vary on how visible you want to make the line. And vice versa. As for pen or brush....for people I use the brush as it just flows easier, but for the truck I used the line tool. It gave really nice edges and perfect lines but was a bitch to make curves hehe, as i had to make so many tiny segments to complete one curve. Though I love the end product it gave.

As for the color thing....gradient tool. I selected the shirt color, blue, and then a darker black/blue for shadows and inverted the gradient. You have to play around with the angle though to get it to flow with the shirt. The same thing with the face only with flesh tones.

sir archely
October 13th, 2003, 11:56
thanks for the tips. :D

i don't know what this "magnet tool" is that you speak of, but i'll mess around a bit. heh.

i was just having problems because the lines i wanted to use were to thin to prevent colors from bleeding into other spaces slightly, but i still wanted the detail. oh well.

Magnet tool....click and hold on the lasso button, a mini drop down menu will appear with three choices...it's the lasso with umm a magnet on it ;)

As for wanting detail and yet no bleeding...try this: Take the trace layer (the one with all your lines on it that's not the background :D ) and duplicate it....with more and more layers of the same thing it becomes darker and more clear, thus insuring a nice clean line while not increasing the width much. Once you have a desired dark line, merge the layers before you start coloring though (Ctrl - E) IIRC

You'd think that, as a graphic deisgner, I'd have much more to share here....

But, browsing my harddrive, I did come across two images that I like, though they are far from new.

The first I did for my friend Rebecca when she got married. She has recorded a song for her husband, and this image was on the CD cover.

The second I did for fun. Basically I pieced together parts of a bunch of different images to make what I call "Public School Science Project."

For some other smaller but more recent works of mine, check out this site. (http://www.worth1000.com/search.asp?search=jabbernaut&searchby=username&perdata=20&page=1) The context of the pics there may not make much sense unless you look into the rules of the contests for which they were submitted, but hey... whatever. ;) Hope you enjoy...

LaughingTurtle

To make 70's retro pictures of things

First find the source pic you want to use.

Magnetic lasso around the object (you)
Copy selection, New image, Paste
Image -> Adjust -> Desaturate
Add a solid background, any color you want
Click back on your object's layer, then go to Image ->Adjust -> Levels
Closer the little triangles are together, the higher the contrast
Then Image -> Adjust -> Gradient Map (click on the actual gradient to edit the color to your choosing - far left should be black, the far right should be a color slightly lighter than the background)
Add a dropshadow blend mode = HAS TO BE NORMAL everything else is up to you
Lastly, add in text (your name/nickname/etc) with some bars/stars, then use a textured brush to blot out some of it to give it a worn look. Add some light scratches to the background with a small brush or go to Filter -> noise -> Add noise (however much you want)

If you need help on how to add the stars or dropshadow just let me know.

Alright to see the finished product you'll have to look at my profile cause i'm not attaching it here as it's a pic of me ;)

EDIT: did a really quick one....still get the just though - Enjoy!

i was inspired this week, so here is a pic of me that i was working on for a couple days, which is my new avy pic now, but then at the last minute someone gave me an idea to make it more .. colourful, so i did, and now it's very tropical parrot-like. so here is me as a tropical parrot. :)

here's a couple others i've been working on. (much spare time  )
my coworker (in vegas) and my cousin respectively. the eerie thing is that when i look at the one of my baby cousin (who's a 4 year old boy, btw) i can really, really see the family resemblace. he looks evil, just like me. :D

Thx much, they're really great and the avy size didn't do em justice.

Keep up the groovy work

This was fun :) I did this at work for a poster that says "I WANT YOU... to take a vacation"

And yes, that is my body :dozey: I dressed up like an idiot and Joe took the photo.

But no, my legs are not that skinny :p lol... I thinned down my regularly beefy stems to keep good ol' Uncle Sam looking elderly ;)

Short story long: I took a picture, messed with it in Photoshop, all just for fun.

No deep meaning or anything, barely even a purpose, I just felt like doing something for kicks and grins.

Not even a title. So call it whatever you like :)

Gotta have something to offset that last Uncle Sam one, eh? :p

Why, what was wrong with the Uncle Sam one?

:p hehehe

i spend way too much time photoshopping photos of myself. i may as well share some. this one is a composition of random doodles in my journal, a wooden elemephant, and a picture of me taking a picture of my reflection. oh and a fireplace but that's only really visible in the original, much larger, version (which also has more fish..). the me-part of the picture is too fuzzy for my liking, but i couldn't find a headshot that fit in there, and it doesn't look all that bad the way it is i guess. oh and the elephant's eye is in fact my eye. i'm not sure what i'm going for in terms of style with this, except perhaps a sense of jamesyness :umm:

this one was somehow inspired by sir archely misplacing his sleep (see absnot). plus my recent desire to stick a cut-up picture onto this little circular puzzle i found lying around. please excuse the pun, i couldn't find a suitable poem.

so i went wandering yesterday, and took a bunch of photos. one of them was of this baby fern, and today at home, while listening to some psychedelic guitarness, i randomly decided to merge the photo with an embryo. a picture of one, that is.. the baby fern has a similar shape to it, foetal-like, which is why i thought it might go nicely. it sort of has. i have about seven versions, and in all of them i'm having trouble merging the lower part of the embryo cohesively. anyway, this is my favourite so far, because i got the veiny-ness of the leaves to come through where i wanted, and the pink mush in the background seems appropriate somehow.

edit: umm...nevermind... ??????

anyways, very wow...especially in my state of whatever it is I'm in...

Hey yourself.

If you ever get ambitious and make more banners like that, I'm sure we could start rustling up an online quiz ;)

FYI: I've removed all my non-Quillfest photos from the Gallery and migrated them over to my new gallery at deviantART (http://jabbernaut.deviantart.com/gallery/).

Most the stuff I have up right now, you've seen before... but there are a couple new photos you haven't.

Really, the whole deviantART site is worth checking out if you never have. Many of you should even sign up and post your stuff for the masses to enjoy/critique. ;)

(Yes, I'm winking at YOU, Jennifer... and Jediwan... and Anita... and Navahli... and Mike...)

also, you can check out more of my stuff on photobucket (http://s110.photobucket.com/albums/n83/alissa_roode/Giant%20Painting%20Project/)... i just uploaded a video that entails the process of the smaller painting i just finished a couple of hours ago... and by smaller i mean only 3'x5' :dozey: haha, 2 down, 2 to go! :)
