View Full Version : Out with the Jeans

Is anyone a clothing designer?
I have real problem with jeans. I don’t like them. They’re uncomfortable, too heavy, too warm for south east Texas, etc. Corduroy posses more comfort, but they’re even warmer than jeans and difficult to find. I don’t really like shorts either; they have the problem of being too casual for work environments. Besides that, I’m not into strutting around with my chicken legs exposed.
I like pajama pants. There are only a couple problems which I think can be easily resolved by clothing designer. First, they need pockets. Some of them have pockets, but usually only two side pockets. I did find a pair with a back pocket, but I didn’t like the style (they had tapered legs). Second, the easy access slot up front needs to go, for reasons that should be quite obvious. If you’re planning to go out in public (in the workplace) you need a secure barn door (or none at all).
So is anyone interested in designing a “semi-formal” line of pajama pants? Or perhaps there are some alternatives out there I’ve overlooked…
I should add…I can’t be the only one with such feelings…there could be a real market for formal (semi-formal) pajama pants.

*cant believe I'm saying this*
I agree with you one hundred percent!
Pajama pants rock my world. Furthermore, on my list of things my future husband must have..one of this is "A firm appreciation for me when I wear PJs." Meaning, He better think I look HOT in PJ Pants!
I think they need TWO back pockets. I also think they need to be careful what material the front pockets are made out of. When they use a thick material, the pockets end up bulging (thus, giving the appearance of some big arsed child barring hips).
Don't get me wrong-I live in jeans. (They make some for girls that are nice and thin. Matter of fact, my biggest problem lately is that all my jeans are TOO thin for this cold weather. I currently have rugby socks pulled up past my knees underneith my jeans). But there's just something about being in PJ pants that makes life worth living.
I also agree with the tapered leg thing. Thats horrid. I'd like a nice pair of straight legged PJ pants in a black with a white pinstripe. Maybe they could even be a little more fit in the butt, but thats not a requirement. Something I could wear with a sweater or a buttondown and no one would EVER know they were PJ Pants. 'cept me. ..And Brax..
Now..all we need is a fashion designer...

I love my pajama pants very much, but I'd never give up my jeans. Yes, shopping for the right pair is torture in the highest degree. It's almost as bad as bikini shopping, but when you find THAT pair...the one that fits like a glove...heaven. Pure bliss. There is nothing like a slightly stretchy pair of Just Below the Waist lightweight demin jeans. They make your butt look bootylicious and they go with almost everything. YEAH jeans!

Meh, I'm a cargo/khakis pants man. They're more comfortable, less constraining and the one has more pockets and the other is perfect for formal wear. I haven't worn jeans in ages...
The problem with pajama pants is their image...you'd be seen as a slacker too lazy to get dressed for the day or as indecent (even though they cover your entire lower body) because they're sleepwear. While I do see a lot of people wearing them on the college campus – men and women, I find it hard ever seeing them as becoming accepted formal wear.

I love hanging out with guys who wear cargo pants....
...no need to carry a purse! :D:p
And..i think...that you could easily pull off black pinstiped PJ pants as real pants if they're made and worn just right.

I was thinking to try kahkis since they seem to be more lightweight than jeans and you can dress them down or up. There are cheaper jeans that seem to be thinner than say a pair of Levi's.
I love pajama pants! I used to own a ton of them. I need to buy some more. Thats what I wear most around the house and a matching sweatshirt and then sometimes slippers that match too!

Slippers..they're overrated. :D

slippers are great when you have to go outside and your in your pjs already and then your slippers match your outfit so it looks like an outfit instead of some crazy chick in her pjs and bunny slippers, plus I get cold way too easily.

I like my jeans! Yes, they're painfully overpriced *drools @ diesel jeans* but they're so comfy (to me).
Of course, the MOST comforable thing to slip into is my tuxedo. It makes me feel like a million bucks. (No, not you Buckweet! Down buck, baaaaaad doggie!)

Call me a jeans person. I have tons of them. Currently I have a pair of Gap loose fit that are my faves, but the banana republic ones are a close second.
I also tend to wear the corteroys and khakis every once in a bit.
77, I have one solution for you. There have been these pants that are as comfortable as pajama pants and that have pockets, including a back pocket being common, and having no "front door" ( :eyebrow: ). These are quite comfortable enough to sleep in and good enough to wear outside without being shunned as some sort of hippy (unless you're are going for that shunned look). Yes, I even have a couple pair of these suckers. I was introduced to them at a young and tender age and I wear them whenever I am lounging around. what are these precious articles of clothing you ask? why... none other than this (http://www.dirtcheapapparel.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=9_24)
You can get a whole range of sorts, from the quite stylish to the basic ones. Whatever floats your boat. ;)
Sweatpants man.... SWEAT PANTS!!!
edit- Dregs, in this country it is quite common for students in college to go to class in pajama pants and slippers. Dare I say, even I had went there once... :umm:

I love jeans but I have a real problem finding a pair that fits right. See, my waist is actually narrower than my hips and butt. Most jeans today seem to be made for girls that have a waist as big as their hips and butt. So if I find a pair that fits my rear, the waist is too big. Gap jeans seem to be the worst for this.

I hate the Gap. They make everything sooooo tiny and expensive. So, am I the only one here that has never bought anything at Gap/Abercrombie&Fitch/Hollister/Banana Republic/etc? I have bought a few things at Old Navy, but that's it.
Goodwill forever!!! ;) Probably about 75% of my clothes are from Goodwill. The one in Prescott is new, so it doesn't have the nasty "Goodwill smell" like others I have been in.

actually i have never bought anything at the gap for myself, so i would not know they fit good or not. However my kids have some pants there and the waist is adjustable they have these elastic things on the inside that you can buttom or unbutton to loosen or tighten. I have kids whos weight changes often during growth spurts so these can come in handy at those times. :)

I am anti jeans too and really like your idea 77. I must confess I do own one pair of jeans which I bought specifically for my new job 18 months ago (I was feeling very conformist that day, wanting to make a good IMPRESSION. I also bought two very plain and sensible blouses from Sussan. They have served me well, the jeans and the blouses (even though I slightly despise the blouses, and no longer try to make an IMPRESSION at work) and serve me still, but I am a slacks girl. In school I used to wear mostly woollen mens slacks from vinnies. Man I was so cool in school, I should go get more of those (haha well I thought so). hehe I have a friend who often mocks me for my complete and utter daggy dress sense (bless him!) Anyway where was I... oh yeah in Uni I used to often go to lectures in my pj pants and a tshirt and my ug boots. But then I never did have many friends at uni...
And Buck... I reckon sweat pants look really povvo. Way less respectable than the cut of pj pants. And the fabric always goes all linty and yuk after a while, they only look nice for a couple of wears. Its just the IDEA of pj pants that people are against. Now anyway don't get me wrong I am all for povvo. Its just we're talking jeans replacement here.
oooh and Val, I never buy anything at those stores either. I used to get all my clothes from Salvation army and Vinnies too. I remember I bought my first new of shelf item of clothing when I was about 15 with money I saved from my job and was sort of let down that it didn't look any better than my other clothes on. I somehow believed that it would transform me into a swan... those clothes had been denied me so long. Then I just lost interest and stuck with the second hand stuff anyway. Now I am about half half, mostly because I have a semi respectable job and i enjoy the novelty. But you would rarely catch me paying more than $AUS20 for anything.

Well, seeing as classes start tommorow, far too short a time to produce a line of formal PJ's, I went to Old Navy. They have nice selection of all cotton pants, so I bought a pair of cotten "jeans" (I actually liked them the best AND they were marked down to 10 bucks), 2 cargo pants, and like half a dozen shirts or so. But just because I bought new clothes...that doesn't mean I'm giving up my PJ pants idea.
Oh, buck, I can't stand sweat pants...they're too true to their name for one, and most that I've seen have tapered legs with elastic around the ankles...gah! But thanks for the suggestion.

AMEN!!! I have the same problem! if it fits my big ol butt, its sooo loose around my waist and I have not been able to buy Gap jeans of any style and I was trying one several pairs with no success and as I was walking out with all my rejects the guy asked me how everything went and I told him that the Gap is not good for my ego and he didnt know how to respond. I AM A WOMAN WITH A WOMANS BODY!!!!!!

ok... i'm a single guy trying to cope with changing fashions once in awhile. i like my own style, but have been accuse of being 'caught in the 90s'. Occasioanlly I go out to buiy new stuff, mostly with some female, because I'm colorblind, an dlike I said, my sense of style sucks. But here are my observations.
1. Dress pants and khakis are now LESS EXPENSIVE than jeans... who would've thunk that?
2. Jeans are cheap. Each year the material get thinner, and like I said, more expensive. ANyone here old enough to remember decent jeans that lasted more than a few washings and COULD BE PUT IN THE DRYER?
3. Certain male stores are becoming more, shall we say polically correct... "Flamboyant'? Am I the only male that thinks some of these outfits scream a certain alternative lifestyle, (not that there's anything wrong with that)
4. Buying clothes sucks. Too tight = trying too hard, Too loose = hiding something
5. My advice guys, take some female with you, correct me if I am worng, but then, at least you know ONE female likes what you're wearing, which is better than NONE....
just this single guy's opinion, is all.......

You should really look at the link I posted. They have on that page all sorts of sweats now adays. You can get the "classic" Champion sweats, or you can get the trendy cotton fleece pants that are the latest buzz. Which is what Im pretty sure is what you got from the ON place. I love jeans but yeah they're uber hard to find. I too have that hip/butt to waist ratio problem, plus the height thing. Like I love the faded ones, but if they're faded too clearly in the knee... well, that knee hits me right around mid-shin. :dozey:
I too have never shopped at The Gap, Old Navy, Abercrombie, Banana Republic, etc. Whenever I find jeans that fit me there are inevitably only one or two pairs so I really have to scavange to find good jeans. Occasionally I've been lucky at Sears, and recently I've discovered Rampage (http://www.rampage.com/depts.asp?deptid=13) ... where about every other time I go I'll find something. They are expensive but their clearance sales are KILLER so if I go at the end of the summer, I'll sometimes find one pair of new favorite jeans for like $11. I'm all about the clearance. But yeah, I can go thru 100 pairs of jeans, try on 15, and maybe find one that fits if I'm lucky. What a pain. I hate shopping.
I have recently discovered the wonders of silk pajama bottoms, and love the one pair that I have, but what a bloody pain to shorten them and take them in here and there cause nothing is made to fit my short waist.

But it's not a problem...it's just that like arch said, models (and apparently lots of girls today) have the figure of prepubescent boys, and we have, umm, curves, to greater or lesser degrees.
And may I ask...Why do girls find it attractive to wear pants that are so low-rise that you can see their butt crack??? I mean, low rise has the potential to look all right...but I don't care how cute the girl is, I don't want to see her BUTT CRACK!!! It's even worse with some girls because they have no butt and the pants sit even lower, exposing even more crack. Yuck!!!

I remember one summer my mom and I were sitting outside of an esspresso place and these girls walk by in low rise jeans and high cut shirts so their tummys were sticking out but the pants were soooo tight they guts where hanging out and not looking very nice. As soon as they passed my mother said "Just because its in style does not mean you should wear it!" That statement works so well in other fashion stuff.

::blinks at her mirror, trying to figure out if she looks like a boy::
So...I dont have much of a butt..but I do have hips. And, I don't have a problem with Gap. The thing to keep in mind is...they have a million different styles and just because one doesn't fit, doesn't mean the rest wont. Also, don't go with the size you normally wear. I find at gap (especially with their stretch line), I actually go a size smaller.
I used to be a Kahkis girl. And banana republic is the store for that..preppy palm beach look. I used to love Old Navy, too...because they're pretty reasonable. But, lately, I feel fat when I try on their clothes. I always have to go up ATLEAST a size..sometimes two. That makes me unhappy. Plus, they certainly don't last very long.
Jeans never last long for me, though. Because, the size I take to fit my hips, its not proportional to my height...thus making them too long....thus causing them to drag and get torn. I think they look cute and hippy-ish like that..but I always have to keep ONE pair and NOT wear them-so I dont go out trying to look nice in jeans and end up looking like a hippy.
I can NEVER find anything at the Levis story that fits right.
Silk PJ pants rock!!! I feel so pretty in them. Also, I found a pair that were made like..a cardigan sweater. Just..knit and thin. They felt pretty too...instead of just the pink flannet with purple stars on them (not that there's anything wrong with those, though! )
