Malcor Sylverwood
June 4th, 2003, 14:08
Member status: Table full--not looking for players
Game time: Tuesdays 7PM Central
Campaign info: Forgotten Realms, High Magic, High Fantasy, Heroic
Website: www.prideofarabel.net
Current players (and DM): Malcor Sylverwood, sir archely, LaughingTurtle, epiph, Cloric the Cleric
Character journals: Cas (http://www.enchantedquill.net/showthread.php?t=33)

Sources:
Core Rules: Players Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide

Class books: Sword and Fist, Tome and Blood, Masters of the Wild, Song and Silence, Defenders of the Faith

Forgotten Realms: Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, Magic of Faerun, Faiths and Pantheons, Silver Marches, Unapproachable East, Races of Faerun

All 3e Dragon magazines

Other things (probably won't get used or is of little use to a player): Manual of the Planes, Oriental Adventures, Psionics Handbook, Deities and Demigods, Enemies and Allies, Hero Builders Guidebook, Book of Challenges, Monsters of Faerun, Monster Manual, Monster Manual II, Fiend Folio, All 3e dungeon mags, Lords of Darkness

Current house rules:
Ability score generation. 4d6 keep three; six times. If your highest score is below a 16, your highest score is changed to a 16; if your highest score is 16+ you can reroll to improve your lowest score. Arrange as desired.

Except in very specific cases, characters are assumed to have basic items such as flint & steel, bedroll, food & water.

The Identify spell can be used multiple times on the same object to identify multiple properties. However, after the first property the caster must make checks as if using the spell Analyze Dweomer, but at increasing difficulty for succesive properties.

Magic weapons with elemental damage (flaming, shocking, etc) are considered to be on by default--not require an action to activate.

Experience is known only to the DM. Casters who wish to spend experience points on spells or items will receive special care.

Sure, within reason ;)

Also, I've edited the first post in this thread to include the house rules I use...or at least the ones I can think of off the top of my head. :D

this is nice, i didn't know that. maybe now i can quit with the terrible "flame on" allusions to fantastic four, huh? .....nah... :p

anyway, in case that wasn't clear, i'm in....

HOWEVER, does anyone know anything about LT? he said he was back, but somewhere he wrote about how he didn't have MSN access, and i haven't seen him on AIM, so he may be MIA...

LaughingTurtle
June 18th, 2003, 08:24
*sigh*

well I am back sorta...just didn't plan on getting an infection and what went along with that. Yesterday and monday weren't fun days at all.

Though I can get on MSN, that's more of just a dial up thing.

sir archely
June 23rd, 2003, 18:52
just curious, but what's on for tomorrow? does everyone want to kick me out of DMing, or what? :D

I've got no problem with finishing what i've set up, but then again, i do think it would be interesting to see where someone else takes it. Also, i wouldn't care if someone wanted to split it with me. Maybe have me do my little bit at the start, take 5, and come back to a new DM.

Oh, also, i suppose it might actually be possible that we have everyone there. In which case Cloric's up. :D Oh, and we get a TPK. :( And i liked Cas so much. ~has cas suggest the party just leaves the dungeon while they're ahead.~ :D hehehe

~shrugs~ I'll do it..since its apparently my ~makes quote marks in the air~ "turn". Unless you want to...whatever. Man, it would be nice to be able to get the other campaign rolling again...or is that just me?

June 24th, 2003, 14:20
Ummm since I wasn't there last time (teeth crap) anyone care to fill me in?

I hope to make tonights but make no promises considering it's dial up and I only have a single phone line. I'll try to make it definitely but it is my parents house, so what they say...sadly goes.

June 24th, 2003, 22:12
well...Draxtuin Aurum, the 12' tall gold Dragon Disciple bit the dust tonight.

hey, just curious, but is cloric gone for next session then? it looked like it in absnot but....~shrug~ i could be mistaken.

Yup. That is correct.

sir archely
June 29th, 2003, 18:23
if you visit the quill's calendar you will see that tuesdays contain the event of the RPG session. if you click on it, you'll also see that you can add a reminder for it.

i strongly encourage some of you to do so. :D :p

Malcor Sylverwood
June 30th, 2003, 19:59
So, who's DMing this secondary campaign? I did last week, Cloric is gone, LT isn't famaliar enough with the rules (I think...you ready to try LT?). Arch, epiph? ;)

-Malcor "Will" Sylverwood

sir archely
June 30th, 2003, 20:13
well, epiph did the time before me last cycle, but it doesn't really matter to me. only thing is if the person who does it isn't me, and doesn't get drax up and running relatively soon, then i'm out.

on that note, what do you guys think, should i make a new char? i don't know if i've ever res'ed a char before, just because character creation is so fun. :) I'm not really sure i want to be the one that brings drax back to life either, if it happens, i dunno, just don't like using DM position to better my own character. maybe i should just forget it and generate a new one. too many if's. well, i suppose even if i do that, i'll have to be injected into the story somehow. ~sigh~

final thought: with my character's status unknown, i'd rather not do the DMing this next session. i don't want to be the one who either brings me back, or puts a new char of mine into the story. I know, that helps, but there it is.

like how i went from not caring and rationalized it to rather not do it? not even intentionally.

epiph
June 30th, 2003, 20:44
oh jeez...i just realized i will be probably be driving through oklahoma and north texas tomorrow night at game time...so i won't be dming.

sir archely
June 30th, 2003, 20:49
but wait...you could...um...call someone, and they'd relay your actions through to chat...and..um...it could work.

well, with cloric and epiph gone for this week, and LT a maybe with phone troubles....can we get a reschedule at all? or is that not even worth it? i'd DM for just malcor and LT if they wanted to. hell, most days last week i played with just another friend in the afternoons. ~shrug~

Malcor Sylverwood
June 30th, 2003, 20:57
hmm...I don't know. I'm not sure what I'm doing this week. I'll have to go to my grandparent's house for the 4th, and I dunno when I'm leaving.

-Malcor "Firecracker" Sylverwood

sir archely
June 30th, 2003, 21:09

Yeah...stupid phone company...loss of service has been happening for the past week at around 5-9pm ish though sometime it varies but always in the afternoon. Called the phone people a couple of times, they'll be sending someone over tomorrow so hopefully something will get fixed.

As for DM'n, mayhaps, not yet exactly but I'd prolly be up for it in the future. Hopefully I'll make it tonight but don't be surprised if I don't or if i'm an hour or 2 late.

i strongly encourage some of you to do so. :D :p

sir archely

Don't think I'll be able to make this weeks session. Maybe, maybe not, just don't hold your breath.

Sorry

sir archely
July 14th, 2003, 14:06
i must also give a similar warning. i'm traveling back to my parents' house tomorrow, so...i'm not sure when that's happening or what's going on. hopefully i'll be there, but, well, ~shrug~

epiph
July 14th, 2003, 14:55
man, and i'm just saying that i CAN make it tomorrow night.

sir archely
July 14th, 2003, 15:09
well, my characters (both of them) are mostly dead anyway. heh. so it should be no big deal if i'm there or not, right? don't get me wrong, i'm still going to make every effort to come, but, well,...family, etc.

sir archely
July 14th, 2003, 19:25
it's official, cas has departed the realm of the PC. i've opted to roll up a new char and start over.

any suggestions for class? with the stats i've got, i'm probably good for just about anything.

Malcor Sylverwood
July 15th, 2003, 19:15
Well, tonight was a no go. ~awards Will 1,000,000xp~ ~awards Aileen 50,000xp (for being her, but forgetting :p)~ ~awards Justina 500,000,000xp because its not my char~ hehe, j/k

So, about next week...I'll be back tuesday, but I'm not sure what shape I'll be in and there's no way I'll be able to DM. So, have it out amongst yourselves.

sir archely
July 22nd, 2003, 00:54
sorry people, but it's two in a row i'm going to be missing here. i have to work tomorrow night. soo....unless you all feel like ordering a pizza to the chat room...and then figuring out how exactly i can deliver it, i won't be showing up.

epiph
July 22nd, 2003, 00:55
isn't malc in ny anyway?

LaughingTurtle
July 22nd, 2003, 12:35

meh...might be another wash...

EDIT: Got update from the man himself, he's currently stuck at the NY airport = no session tonight

epiph
July 25th, 2003, 11:17

sir archely

hey, i'm in for the next one, it's a priority. so...there.

Malcor Sylverwood
July 29th, 2003, 16:17
Has anyone seen arch recently? ~is concerned~

Anyway, I think I'm going to hold off going back to the primary campaign until we're (I'm ;)) ready to go to 3.5. This will work well since we'll already have new characters that need to be created...better than creating new ones now and then also having to update them.

Malcor Sylverwood
August 4th, 2003, 14:59
And I'm guessing that to be the case again...epiph is in Cali and arch is still MIA...so, yeah. Lets just not worry about tomorrow so everyone has an open schedule instead of cancelling at the last minute.

August 12th, 2003, 02:11

Malcor Sylverwood
August 12th, 2003, 23:20

Cloric the Cleric
August 18th, 2003, 15:54
I'll make a concentrated effort, but I may be moving things this week...if we're all sure we'll be here, tho, I'll make it happen. Let me know.

Thanks

Cloric the Cleric
August 19th, 2003, 16:10
Hmm...I'm going to suspect the total lack of...response or something...at t-minus 3 hours signifies that we're not gaming again tonight...or are we discussing it someplace else, and you are all just conspiring against me...hmmm

*looks around suspiciously*

I knew it.

sir archely
August 23rd, 2003, 00:40
um...hello? yeah, so are the things still tuesdays? heh. anyway, i'd just like to say that it's entirely within the realm of possibility that i'm able to play this coming tues, the 26th. i'm not sure yet, but right now i'd give it a 50% chance of happening, which might not sound good, but it's better than the 0% chance i've had lately. must...game...soon...

i think if i don't do some real gaming soon my head is going to explode, which, while interesting, would probably be painful.

epiph
August 23rd, 2003, 13:20
works for me...

...i must be tired...i started typing "post reply" before i actually realized what i was saying...

Cloric the Cleric
August 25th, 2003, 10:21
well, I guess I had better get the new house's network up and running by tommorrow then.

*works frantically*

sir archely
August 25th, 2003, 15:02
okay, so....i kind of need a final answer...are we on for tomorrow or not?

if we are, i need to let someone know so they can find a replacement before tomorrow. (and there's still a chance that might not happen.) i'll check back here later to see what's up.

Malcor Sylverwood
August 25th, 2003, 17:49
Final answer? ~smacks sir "Regis" archely~

Anyway...I'll be around (like thats a surprise), but since I'm trying to readjust to school life (mainly the getting up early part) I can't guarentee I'll be able to focus enough to DM. But other than that, roll on...

-Malcor "Tired" Sylverwood

sir archely
August 26th, 2003, 00:05
well, if it's on, i'm 100% a go. hmm...although both my chars are dead or equivalent. hmm. well, malcor, i don't know your schedule or anything, but if you want to call it off, or anyone wants to call it off, whatever, i'd appreciate knowing by 5 pm central so i can still go make some money. ~shrug~ no biggie though.

Malcor Sylverwood
August 26th, 2003, 06:32
I'll be here (barring something catastophic)...so if you're around we'll do *SOMETHING*. Of course, I can understand the money thing too... ;)

-Malcor "Running off to class" Sylverwood

Cloric the Cleric
August 26th, 2003, 10:11
I'll be there, barring not being able to get my network back up. I'm having issues with one of the computers on the network, but nothing Major...and Arch, um...I'll check with Malc on this, but I don't think he'd have a problem with you rolling stats with me if you haven't done it yet...that is if you wanted to just close the book on Drax, if not then I'm sure something can be done, early enough for you to still get some good gaming in...

*calls Malc to make sure*

sir archely
August 26th, 2003, 11:21
heh, i rolled stats up....to replace Cas. So...i think drax was going to have something fun happen to him. I could be wrong though. I do still need to figure out what to do with these stats i rolled up. Suggestions? i'm thinking about going the halfling rogue route.

in the order i rolled them...
13
11
16
15
17
14

Cloric the Cleric
August 26th, 2003, 12:50
Halfling rogues are fun...and the stats look good for it...And Malc's already called out for DMing tonight, and you said you didn't want to DM the session that might bring Drax back, so that leaves it to me or Epiph...whereever she may be...guess we can figure that out tonight...

and I'm guessing since I haven't made something to replace Torr yet, we'll be going the other route...

Malcor Sylverwood
August 26th, 2003, 13:55
Yeah...we'll definanetly be running our elven village campaign. The other is in a bad state of repair right now...and I don't know that I want to try to fix it until I can get my hands on a 3.5 version of PCGen--and that looks like its sadly distant. We can go back sooner, its not the big of a deal, if you all want. I just need chars from LT, Cloric, and Arch. heh.

Umm...anyway, for tonite...I will DM if it comes to it, and if it gets weird I'll just blame it on sleepiness and trig... :umm:

August 28th, 2003, 10:45
Okay. Malc and Epiph already knew this, so this is just to let Arch and LT know....

Dart league starts up again the second week of September. I had planned to be part of a Thursday night team again, however we all know about the best laid plans of mice and men. My team has decided to go to Tuesdays, and we've been playing together for quite a while now, so I can't abandon them. If nothing can be worked out, I'll quite understand, but...well...sorry folks. This gives us 2 weeks to decide.

OK, here's the latest thought running through my head...feel free to comment--both pro and con.

Probably scrapping the current campaigns, unless for some reason you are all terribly attached to some character...

Starting a new campaign, using the Quill's war world as the setting. Since neither epiph or Cloric are going to be available for a time, I think I'll look for one more player (if they can be found) and start with LT and arch--and yes, adding our missing members back in as they come back and are available.

Obviously, doing this will require some more thought, and work, but I think it could be good for both the DnD game and the war. Although, it should be noted, that one will not have a direct effect on the other. Peices might, if I define a city and dungeon complex in DnD, it might be added to the war if it fits. And things that get added from the war might be added to the DnD version.

Anyway, just an idea. Some things that would HAVE to be done are creating the gods with their portfolios and such, and probably regions and assigning regional feats to them.

Discuss.

-Malcor "DM" Sylverwood

sir archely
January 20th, 2004, 18:09
like i said before, i think it sounds like a great idea...

my question is... are you wanting to play within the bounds of the plot of the war? ie- same timeframe, same area, same events... and follow along? or maybe pick a point and say here's where we leave off, and everything before that in the war has happened, but we write our own ending within the DnD context? or... we play within the same world (read: campaign setting) but just play in some other time, place, etc.?

okay, so that was a bunch of questions, but yeah...

EDIT: another thought would be to actually have us (or a few, couple or one of us) make characters in the war, and just play to see what happens to them, then write about it in the war.

LaughingTurtle
January 20th, 2004, 18:34
I really like the idea, my vote goes towards same world, though not same impact...as that I believe would require too much time and effort to effectively make it both easy enough and fun for those who would want to join.

Though certain world events could be in both settings if it is so desired, such as lately - chaos whistle blown. But you wouldn't run into say Uni or Tak.

Cloric the Cleric
January 20th, 2004, 23:26

Here's the diety list I came up for PCGen...if you're curious...

sir archely
January 22nd, 2004, 01:09
well, malcor's been working on the deities for this, and he asked me to work on defining the regions. i think i might be going rather beyond what he asked for at this point, but hey, if i'm going to do it, i might as well do it right. although, as a result, i may be taking a few...um... creative liberties with stuff that hasn't been clearly defined. after all, most of the location stuff is just the cities, and i'm actually trying to fill it out a bit. I'll only use new stuff where there's holes in info provided for each, not replace anything already there. so... i guess if you have any suggestions on a particular region or thoughts or anything, i'd be more than happy to put them in. i basically just lifted the entry for regions from the FR core campaign setting book. so each entry looks like this:

Amelar
Capital: Ameloct
Population:
Religions:
Imports:
Exports:
Alignment:

{General Description}

Life and Society
livelihoods, attitudes, people, tendencies, business

Major Geographical Features
Where does region exist?
NAME1: about it, etc.
NAME2:

Important Sites
General
City Name1:

Regional History

Plots and Rumors

I'll probably just strike off the plots and rumors bit, maybe that's something to fill in as we go. ~shrug~ The history bit might be a scrawny thing as well.

I'm also trying to do something that's probably closer to what malcor's looking for, which is just a list of the 10 regions, a little general info, feats, and equipment options. (did i miss anything malc? i left religion/deity preference off purposely since i'm unsure about that as yet.)

The 10 regions are as follows:
Amelar
Balenar
{Bloomingdale}
Narch
{Darkstone Keep}
Belfas
Neves
Sylverwood
Ehrenhal
Delen'dun

The couple with brackets are ones i didn't want to have simply the name of the principal city, but i didn't have a ready name for either. The cities we have defined for the war serve as the "capital" cities for each region, unless someone specifically tells me otherwise.

Lastly, one major thing that seems to be lacking is language differences. We don't really deal with that in the war, as it seems everyone is speaking 'common' or whatever. so if anyone has suggestions as to that, i'm open. ~shrug~

EDIT: i also was thinking about working out a place to stick in the halflings... ;)

Malcor Sylverwood
January 22nd, 2004, 06:07

Malcor Sylverwood
January 22nd, 2004, 21:17
Not trying to step on your toes, arch (creatively speaking), but I wanted to work on the coding some. So, heres what I've done.

Created a Knowledge (Amelar) skill.

Created Amelar template that makes the Knowledge (Amelar) skill a class skill and adds two RANKS to it.

Created Downtrodden feat with the prereqs of 2 ranks of Knowledge (Amelar) and gives a +2 bonus to Sense Motive and Spot.

sir archely

Malcor Sylverwood
January 24th, 2004, 22:53
Feats created so far...these of course require you to be from the region or have 2 ranks of Knowledge (region)

Amelar
Downtrodden: Sense Motive,Spot +2
Thrifty: Appraise,Bluff +2

Bloomingdale
Silver Tongue: Bluff,Diplomacy +2
Slave Survivor: Fortitude,Willpower,HP +1

~really just doesn't want to change his lst files~

-Malcor "Lazy" Sylverwood

sir archely
January 26th, 2004, 00:14
nsh to both of you.

anyway, here's what i've done for amelar so far... if anything strikes you as not making sense or being out of place or contradictory or something, let me know. i assure you i won't take offense. :) it's nothing compared to the stuff in FR, but at least it's more meat on the bones. at this point i think i'm going to leave off the regional history and plot hooks for a while, and if this looks okay to people, just continue on in this fashion. one other thing is that the population numbers are just sort of pulled out of my butt, as i have really no desire to go calculate population densities and things so... ~shrug~ if it looks way wrong, say something.

Amelar
Capital: Ameloct
Population: 384,430 (76% human, 22% dwarves, 1% elves)
Government: Monarchy (weak)
Religions:
Imports: Grain, wood, horses, livestock
Exports: Stone, fish, ore
Alignment: CG, CN, CE

If you came to Amelar when the fog has rolled in off the Great Sea, you might be given to believe you were viewing a piece of a great civilization. Once, you would have been right. Now, when the sun peels back the fog, all that remains is a crumbling broken-down city, and the crumbling, broken-down people who live here. The color seems washed out; everything is gray or black. Most people with enough money to leave are already gone.

Life and Society
The people of Amelar are ruled by distrust and suspicion. The motto of the area seems to be “watch your own back.” Most people are simple farmers growing what they need to live on and selling very little, fisherman making what they with catches from the Great Sea, or miners in the Black Mountains. These trades were once great, but have fallen on hard times. Very little trade comes down the Sylverwash anymore, though once the entire area thrived on this. There are not very many serious merchants to speak of in Amelar, and craftsmen are a rarity. There’s simply nobody to sell to.
Amelar is the bottom of the barrel in every category. Even the thieves know there isn’t much to steal here. Still, thieves and murders run wild in the city. For people with no skills, and no prospects, the sheer lawlessness of the area can be a draw. If they can’t live anywhere else, they can come to Amelar. Helping hands are rare here, especially from the government. The government consists of simply the royal family, with the current Prince at the top. Princesses have been known to come to power, and scheming within the family for dominance is a common occurrence.
The royal family squeezes what it can from the population, and as a result, are much resented by the general population. However, the royalty does not even pretend to hold control over even most of the city of Ameloct, preferring to take anything they can and protect only themselves. The soldiers in the region are nonexistent, simply a very skilled royal guard in and around the royal palace, men masquerading as a city watch who are probably some of the more corrupt men in the city, and a small navy. The navy gives the royal family some small pretense to say they protect the area, fending off the occasional pirate attack, but the ships are large, and slow, and protect the royalty’s interests above all else.

Major Geographical Features
Amelar is centered around Ameloct, where the Sylverwash empties into the Great Sea. Rolling hills dominate the landscape, smaller as one goes north of the Sylverwash, but increasing in size dramatically as one approaches the Black Mountains in the south. Vegetation is sparse, low shrubs and grasses for the most part, although there are a few small forests in the shadow of the mountains.
Darkspear: Darkspear is the name given to the thrust of the Black Mountains that juts into the Great Sea. More commonly referred to by locals as simply the Spear, this area is dominated by the black spikes of land that push their way up out of the water. Sailors make a wide berth around the Spear, preferring the long way around to the coarse stone and hidden snags. Legends surround the place, partially due to the frequency with which it is shrouded in fog and steam. It’s said the land changes continuously, and more than one ship has gone under thinking they knew a way through only to hit an unexpected piece of land.
Balos’ Falls: Who or what Balos was, or why the falls came to carry the name is fodder only for fanciful stories told in taverns. The falls, however, are an impressive reality. Created in a massive earthquake, these falls lie not far upriver from Ameloct, and their creation most likely had a part to do with the drop off of trade to the area. A portion of the riverbed dropped significantly, creating a huge waterfall. The river barges could no longer make the journey all the way down to Ameloct or upriver to Neves. A village quickly sprang up at the falls, handling transport of goods, but the extra handling increased costs for merchants.
The Pit: Following the small track up into the mountains from the mining town of Kasor, and continuing past the mine entrances will lead one to this enormous chasm. Simply known in the area as The Pit, this gorge extends for miles in the mountains. It’s seemingly bottomless, with walls of shiny black glass. Some say that there are nights one can see fires of demons shimmering faintly up from the depths below. A rickety wooden bridge crosses it where the path ends, but the track on the other side is less than clear. Why anyone would want to cross it, or what’s on the other side is anyone’s guess.

Important Sites
The only city of any significant size within Amelar is the capital, Ameloct. Small farming and fishing villages dot the hills and coast. However, the majority of the population still resides in the city.
Ameloct: Signs of this city’s past greatness can be seen in its almost impossibly high towers and once opulent mansions. However, all of these grand places are mostly empty, except for the bravest of squatters. The locals say that these places are haunted by all kinds of supernatural creatures, but its more truthful to say nobody can afford to pay the upkeep and the taxes on such places. There is one exception, the royal palace is lavishly maintained, an oasis in a sea of poverty.
The citizens of Ameloct are used to being trod upon and getting nothing in return. Many times outsiders have come to them promising to pull them out of their poverty, only to exploit them further. The royal family and its retainers an exception to the general poverty. They live a luxurious lifestyle. The gardens are carefully tended to, their clothes are of the finest foreign makes, and their food is more then plentiful—often being wastefully discarded.
Kasor: A small mining village in the foothills of the Black Mountains south of Ameloct, Kasor can be reached by a worn, winding track. Why anyone chooses to go there is another matter altogether. The population is mostly miners, with some small time farmers in the immediate area. A large quarry is not far from the village, this is where the majority of the population spends their days. A small mule track leads up farther into the mountains, leading to other mines, working and not.
Trade: The town of trade simply carries the name of the most common transaction that takes place there. It lies on both shores of the river in the area of Balos’ Falls. For the first time visitor, everything about Trade seems hasty, in stark contrast to the stagnation of Ameloct. Most buildings are little more than wooden shacks, and a wooden cart bridge drapes across the river above the falls like a drunken man sprawling over a puddle. Tracks for wagon transport of trade goods go around the falls to the south of the river, and the exchange from upriver to downriver is the trade for which the town gets its name. None living remember the time when the falls were created, but some can remember when Trade actually was a fast-paced town, and grew seemingly overnight. Now, while giving the appearance of haste, a careful eye will see that the wagons move slowly, and the people don’t come close to filling up the decaying wooden houses.

Blah?

That's it? I offered Black Mnts. as a viable alternative for the region name, and you come up with Blah?

Nsh to you. Nsh.

*realizes he has put no other effort into this and creeps softly away*

Edit: give me a few days and I'll work on government and religions (non-human)...since this city was my creation to begin with. *nods*

cool, thanks. :)

the only thing with having it as "black mountains" or something similar is that there are two other regions that at least include a part of the black mountains, amelar and delen'dun. it wouldn't be a big deal i guess, but... ~shrug~

Huzzah! Balenar is done. I think. Anyway, i'm up to 15 pages in word, and i'd say i'm about half done. i'm doing spotty stuff here and there when the mood strikes me mostly. well, here's the rest of balenar.

Balenar is a region on the move. Not literally of course, but the population is exploding, trade has never been better, and new settlements seems to spring up overnight. Balenar is a popular place for merchants of nearly all stripes, and the peace it keeps with its neighbors only makes it that much more welcoming to those wishing to make their fortune. A place of smiles and welcomes, the dark underbelly of Balenar, if indeed there is one at all, is nearly nonexistent. It is said that there is little as sweet as watching the sunset over the bay from the towers of Balenoct.

Life and Society
The people of Balenar are a kind, welcoming folk for the most part. Directions are easily had, and many a tavern-goer will readily share tales with a foreigner. There is little to complain of if you live in Balenar. Many of these people are craftsmen come to Balenar to ply their trades in a prosperous environment. Though, fisherman and farmers are not uncommon either. A large logging industry operates north of the bay and provides the timber needed for building ships and other crafts, in addition to selling the raw wood to other regions.
Though Balenar war ruled by a royal family in the past, now, most decisions are made by a council of merchants. Trade is made a good prospect by the Red River, which flows next to the capital city, and the quiet, calm, but deep bay that is sheltered from storms by the Aron Peninsula. The council is made up of not the wealthiest merchants, but generally the eldest in any given area. These merchants take advice from the others in their trades, and debate city decisions in council with the others. This leads to a fluctuation in the primary trade of Balenar, as more charismatic merchants replace their less charismatic elders, or vice versa. However, there is no one who thinks of the Bales as anything other than merchants.
Despite this common generality, Balenar has a surprisingly strong military force. A strong city guard in the capital is often used to protect various shipments or merchants themselves. A lesser, but still quite strong standing military maintains the rule of Balenar upriver to Hurdan and to the outlying areas. However, the real strength of Balenar lies in its superb navy. This is the main defense against pirates, and keeps smugglers in line (for the most part) as well. Amazingly, there is little corruption in both the military and the government, and an offer of a bribe could land one in jail for a few nights. The region is prosperous enough to not need bribes.

Major Geographical Features
Balenar extends around the Gwendoline Bay completely, and includes a wide arc of land starting from the lower lip of the Bay and sweeping around Balenoct. The borders end on the Red River about halfway between Balenoct and Bloomingdale, and in the north just barely include the mouth of the Drake River. The land varies much in Balenar, from the grass plains south of the Red River to the thick forest north of the Bay to the Drake River.
Gwendoline Bay: Obviously a large part of the daily lives of people in Balenar, Gwendoline Bay takes its name from a story that many tell over a pint in any tavern in the area. Many years ago, the beautiful daughter by the name Gwendoline of a poor fisherman who lived on the bay fell in love with a Prince of Balenoct. The Prince professed his love for her as well, and promised her that they would be wed, someday, as he said. Gwendoline gave him her heart and body completely, only too find that the Prince had been using her. The Prince wed another, a noblewoman, and Gwendoline was heartbroken. She walked north of the city, to cliffs along the shore, and threw herself in. Seeing this, Corzon, the god of love, sent dolphins that make the bay their home to bear Gwendoline up from where she had fallen in, to be his consort. The dolphins are said to have carried her body far out to the west, into the setting sun. Corzon also cast down the Prince into ruin, and in doing so ended the royal family rule. The people of Balenoct have adopted Gwendoline as something close to a personal goddess, and prayers are offered up to her no matter what the subject. The bay itself is extremely deep, and home to many schools of dolphin.
The Gwen: A well-worn larger than life sized statue of a woman is situated on the eastern side of Gwendoline Bay, north of the city of Balenoct, on a cliff face. The carved woman’s long flowing hair hides her nakedness, as she watches to the west. Locals call the statue The Gwen, saying it was carved by Corzon himself to mark the spot where Gwendoline threw herself into the water. In reality, pirates carved the statue many years ago, in order to mark the entrance to a nearby cavern. First used by the pirates, then by smugglers, the cavern has since fallen out of memory and use.
Aron Peninsula: The Aron Penninsula is the arm of land that extends out into the Great Sea, creating Gwendoline Bay. This tall ridge of land serves as one of the principal defenses of the capital city of Balenoct. Storms coming in off the sea that would normally have lashed the city instead run aground here. In addition, the small outpost on the peninsula provides early warning of any approaching hostile vessels by mirror of fire signals long before they have reached the city.

Important Sites
The major city in Balenar is the capital city of Balenoct. However, many other, smaller, cities are present in the region as well. In addition to these many small villages can be found.
Balenoct: The bustling seaport of Balenoct is located at the mouth of the Red River, on the Bay of Gwendoline. Brother to Ameloct in the south, the architecture of Balenoct is obviously dated to about the same time. However, where Ameloct is run-down, Balenoct is thriving on trade down the Red River, and through its busy seaport. Its impossibly high towers occasionally can be seen with scaffolding around them, indicating upkeep and repairs on the old structure. In places it is easy to see where new stone has replaced the old. Most of this stone is red granite, brought down the river from the Garenheim Mountains, and how the river got its name.
However, the population of Balenoct is continuously growing, and the size of the old city was not able to control the rapid growth. In light of this the city has expanded quite a bit from the original dimensions. Many homes are still built with the relatively cheap granite, but increasingly on the fringes wooden buildings are going up quickly. The inner core of the city is now known to most as Old Bale, while the newer, outer areas are New Bale. In fact, Bale is just beginning to be used on formal documents and maps of the city, and many children do not even know the full old name of their residence. Old Bale, and most of New Bale are walled, but in this time of peace and prosperity, increasingly people are starting to build outside the walls.
Hurdan: Hurdan is situated along the Milten Tract, almost exactly halfway between Balenoct and Bloomingdale. The city itself straddles the border, half controlled by Balenar, half controlled by Bloomingdale. The city was built intentionally on this spot, and has a rigidly designed layout. The external walls are of the same red stone that Balenoct was built with, and form the city into a nearly perfect square. Four gates break the walls, one each on the east and west, and the last two to the south, facing the river. The defining feature of Hurdan is not any of its external walls, however. Rather, it is the two walls that parallel one another down the center of the city from north to south. These two walls are separated by about thirty feet of open space, and there is a north gate and a south gate in each. For this wall, Hurdan could be called two cities living in close proximity, but for the fact that when there is danger, this wall is forgotten and the entire city works together to defend itself.
Aron Garrison: The Aron Garrison is less of a town and more of, well, a garrison. However, this stout tower provides a haven for all the many fishermen who make the Peninsula their home. A large box of stone, the Aron Garrison sits near the end of the peninsula itself. Always manned by a rotating group of soldiers from Balenoct, the tower here contains the large mounted mirror used to alert Balenoct of approaching enemies or storms, whether with sun or fire. When this happens, the garrison opens its doors to any inhabitants of the peninsula who wish to seek shelter there. It is large, but even so, when the people come in it’s nearly bursting with people and their cherished possessions.
Faen: Faen is the northernmost city in Balenar, sitting among the outlets of the Drake River where it flows into the Great Sea. The city also sits on the ruins of a much older, and larger city that once occupied the same spot. Sitting on the end of the Drake River as it is, the city itself is broken up into various districts by the various outlets of the river, and large bridges join each section. These bridges were clearly not built recently, but survive from the older city. Much smaller than Balenoct or even Hurdan, Faen is also much slower paced. Much of the population of the city is halflings, and they build according to their stature. As such, a human may be walking through the city, turn a corner, and be suddenly faced with buildings meant for smaller folk. Real defensive walls only surround the largest district of Faen, the Jarash.
