MMKAY! My Beautiful, loverly laptop has recently decided to hate me. And..I cant fix it.

I ran Speed disk, Virus scan AND Clean Sweep off Norton System Works (which, I have thanks to a certain Violent Skwid)...and NOTHING comes up.

But..the minute I sign onto aol, the welcome screen comes up..followed by a message about .dll and...errors or..something..and before I can click, "send report" ..MY COMPUTER TURNS OFF!!!!! it just goes black..and then it restarts. So I fiddle around somemore and try again...AND IT DOES IT AGAIN.

wtfeypoo is up with it? Can someone give me a suggestion? I was thinking of blowing away aol then reinstalling it..but if its not going to work..then I wont go through the trouble.

PLEASE HELP!
Love,
FizzBoBizz

(Edit) PS-I'm on my parent's computer atm

Well, this is pretty basic advice...but if its a particular peice of software thats causing it (AOL in this case), you remove that software. Then, since you no doubt need it...try reinstalling it.

Good luck!

Thats what David said..but I never listen to him. I guess I can try. ~huggles the Malc~ Thanks.

...Quirk-mister...

I'm keeping a list. You've got...~whips out calendar~ 3 months and 25 days (I think) until you're pummeling.

Yea try what malc said first.

Hmmm if it is what I think it is though, I think you have the latest virus that went around my school about 2-3 weeks ago. It randomnly resets computers. If it is that then you need to update your virus scan to the latest definitions otherwise it wont see that virus. It hit my school big time. All in one day half the computers in my department just started resetting and everyone was complaiing about it.

The problem with that is that you dont have a chance to update. So, what I would do as last resort is download the latest definitions from the website onto a disk and install them via a disk. It is a lot of work, but this virus had some nastypesky variants. The joy of windows hating hippy unix users.

Yeh... Reinstalling aol didnt work. And now I, the completely computer illiterate girl, am going to have to figure out this whole download virus definition thing by myself.

I would, however, like to take this time to rant about some things...

I dont download anything. I'm completely anal about that stuff because my dad is forever destroying computers by reading every FREAKING chain mail email, downloading every joke someone sends and installing every "Verse of the Day" program he can get his grumpy little mits on. But who gets the ickiest virus on earth?! ME!!! Who has to fix it by herself?! ME!!!

Thank you, Bucky, for letting me know whats going on. Now..what "website" is it exactly that I need to go to? And..ugh.

OKAY...how do I update norton once i'v got the updates on a disk?

AquaFizz

EEEEEEEEEEK!

Y'all!! I did it all my myself! I went to norton and i DLed the updates onto floppies...actually...one floppy. For some reason we have a million floppy disks..and the comp would only read one. So i DLed the first update and then uploaded it into my puter then put the disk back in my parents, deleted the first and downloaded the second..then repeated! :-) Now its updated and I'm running a virus scan!

HOPEFULLY my problem will be fixed.

Awww! Hero called me 'love!'

~El Swoon-o~

...I'm a little worried..so far my virus scan still hasnt found anything. If its not a virus...i might cry. heh. that sounds weird. I just am going to be really disappointed if I did all that work and its still funky.

Do you have time to write down the exact error it gives you?

edit: also, be sure to run EndItAll 2.0, to be sure your background tasks aren't adding to the problem

Are they paying you for all the free advertising? thats the second or third time you've mentioned that to me lately. You're slipping old man. I already got it. Just for you....and luke the lazy laptop.

..pardon me good sir. Whatever was I thinking. You're far more intelligent then any of the poor souls I know. I do hope you'll forgive and will, perhaps one day, share your knowledge with this whelp.

Translation: You're such a nerd.

Hopefully the update workes Fizz lass (yes Im competing with pj)

If it doesnt, I have some other recommendations.

enditall works nice but works better in conjucture with:

SpyBot Search & Destroy
Adaware
Zonealarm (a must!)

I dont use norton myself. I use AVG, which has free edition version that updates very often.

Good Luck!

All these boys comin' to my rescue. How coot! Yeh..i have all those..except Zonealarm, I'll look into that. Between my friend Scott and QT, I think they've made me get every little protection thing on the face of the planet (though..I'm still holding out for a tazer on my birthday).

Well..it should have worked..the whole..virus definitions thing...I think i did it right. I dont know. But..it didnt solve my problem. However, PJ and his buddy tried even MORE stuff and after a night full of failure...

...I reformated! ..so..heh..PROBLEM SOLVED! I do appreciate you giving me the heads up on how to do the updates manually, tho, bucks. I felt mucho gusto intelligent..o!

Ahhh clean slate aye?

Hmmmm I highly recommend you get zonealarm(free version). A lot of worms and the like can get right on your computer from the iternet nowadays without email attatchments or websites. Its the latest thing since swiss cheese to those darn tootin mallicious hacker people. A lot of Windows vulnerabities and the like.

Get Zonealarm; pretty much it is a firewall. It hides your computer from the internet and anything that goes to and fro must be physically ok'd by you. You can option to ok it once or check the box for it to remember that choice. It only tells you the names of the files attemting to connect so it may be intuitive, but if you did what you said you did it should be a piece of cake. It gives you the control!

*hands Fiz the control*

Oh wait give me that! Thats my remote *snatches it*
