    Default RTS search...

okay, i'm looking for a new real time strategy game to play. i've beaten both the starcraft thing and the warcraft thing to death and beyond. anyone have any other suggestions as to some nifty rts games that could keep me busy for half as long as those kept me busy?

Well, the RTS thing has died down the last five years. Which is rather disappointing because I always loved a good one. They still make em, sure, but it won't be like Total Annihilation, SC or WC ever again.

    The currents:

    Warhammer:40K

This has two expansions now, the latest one letting you play the Necrons. Instead of resource collection, you capture points on the map, so the game is much more offensive and zerg rush friendly. If you havent played this one, it is a definite one to try out. The last expansion is sort of a stand alone, but only lets you play the two new races if you do not have the original and the first expansion installed.

Some people love this game, a lot of RTS'ers I know hated it. I guess I fall somewhere in the middle at "this can barely hold me over till another good RTS comes out"

    Company of Heroes

A WWII RTS. I Don't know much about it b/c I didn't bother getting it. I can barely stomach the WWII cliche in FPS's and seeing them leak over into RTS has me running the other way.

I have heard though that graphically this game is quite pretty, and some of the things th individual units can do are cool, but I didn't delve deep enough to learn exactly what due to my disapproval of a WWII RTS.

Those two are the recent ones as far as I know. There are also the older RTS games. Total Annihilation, which I mentioned is as old as SC , so if you havent tried it, Id recommend it. The TA worshippers believe it is better than SC, but the SC people elieve the opposite. *shrug*

And there are also the Age of Empires and Age of Legends games. I played most of these for like a day or two. Too much dead air time and none of the units stood out as cool to me.

If you see something else that is good and passed below my radar, mention it, cause I pretty much gave up my RTS hat out of apathy.
I wanna be like a goose and fly to new orleans for the winter and to canada for the summer.

so, funny thing, yesterday i went to gamespot.com to just do a search on their top rated RTS games. interestingly, i found out that this highly anticipated game just came out... yesterday. it's called supreme commander, and it's by the same guy who made total annihilation, so they're touting this as the "spiritual sequal" to that game. whatever that means. anyway, i read some about it, and looking at the screen shots, it looks like it could be quite the game. though, i guess something they went for is to just have massive massive battles. not sure if my pc can handle it if it's a brand new game.

i'm also not so much into the WWI or II games, so blah to that.

i was also looking at black and white, anyone know anything about that? it didn't look exactly like what i'd want in a RTS (what i want essentially being starcraft with more stuff) but i might give it a go if it's got good reviews.

i might just put up the 25 bucks and get a copy of WCIII. i've played it, but not all the way through, and only on a friend's comp. so it might be worth it to get my own. i just was looking for something brand new.

Black and White is not an RTS. Its a game where you play a god and have your beast do stuff for you through complicated mouse movements and whatnot.

I recently bought the Rome: Total War Gold Edition (that includes the Barbarian Invasion) for about $10 (nice old games and their prices ). And I must say that I'm enjoying it from time to time. A whole new type of RTS with fairly realistical armies the size of which would have the Zerg think you're overdoing it a bit . That and the fact that it's a bit different from the "first mission: build baracks" "second mission: kill those enemies" thing that's been going on since Dune II. The battles are only half the game since you're trying to build (or destroy) an empire. At the moment I have about 20 armies running around the place, each containing between 1000 and 1500 men.

In any case, if you haven't played that one already, defenitly something I recommend. Of course, if your wallet is just bursting with money, you could also get Medieval II: Total War, which is the prettier, newer version.

The thing I learned from this game so far is: when in doubt, mass murder is usualy the safe option.
"When I think I might die without seeing a hundredth of all there is to see it makes me feel," he paused, then added, "well, humble, I suppose."
" And very angry, of course."
