Default So I got a Wii

I am planning on getting a 360 when the new fabrication process hits in the fall. The current ones make me nervous, there have been too many "red rings of death". In the meantime, my PS2 has become a Relic (got bored with it) and my PC is slightly outdated and I have no interest in building a new computer any time soon. So that left me in a gaming void. I figured I might as well get a DS or a Wii in the meantime to enjoy over the summer and fall. The Wii ended up winning my heart b/c of a certain game (super smash brothers!) coming out very soon. So I went and picked one up earlier this week.

    And I am loving it.

It came with Wii Sports, which although cool will not keep my attention for long. Paper Mario is also cool, but it has no replay value. (i should have rented it).

Rayman is hysterical. It is jam packed full of psilly minigames that have me either cursing the television set or laughing my ass off the couch. Just last night I was shooting attacking rabbits with a plunger gun. Much fun was had.

Which brings me to why I am enjoying the Wii so much. It has a ton of party games. It is very different sort of gaming than Im used to (the more serious kind). Of course, this isn't the only type of stuff the Wii has to offer.

The one game I'm actually looking forward to picking up this weekend is SSX Blur, the snowboarding game. I'm a die hard fan of the SSX seriers, I can not wait.

Anyone else have one? I want to trade Mii's

Anyone have any recommendations for games to buy or rent?

I refuse to get a Wii...smee wants one and i roll my eyes everytime he hints we should get it...i'm enjoyin the 360 for gaming with Dead Rising, Gears of War, FIFA and a few othrs...the ps3 is barely gettin any play...FEAR is ok, Virtua Fighter is dull, Call of Duty 3 is ok but gets a bit tedious...killed so many germans over the years its gettin kinda dull...and formula 1 is out dated already! Resistance fall of man was easily completed and has no replay value...its too basic and simple in plot and level structure.

~shrugs~ smee will likely get a Wii from me and my bro for his birthday...but i doubt i'll give it too much play...i still have mh gamecube and i think that adequate for nintendo games ~nods~

i just cn't pictue myself prancin about playin a game on it.

computer games are for when i'm feelin lazy.

Ha, there is no prancing about with the Wii. At most, your arms are flailing about depending on the game. And there are quite a few games that use regular controls.

As for the games that use the wiimote. My latest acquisition is SSX Blur. I had Tricky on my PS2 and loved it for a damn long time. Supposedly this new one beats even Tricky out. You use the wiimote and nunchuck attachment to control the board and grabs/jumps. As cool as that sounds, it is even cooler in practice. I spent an hour learning the controls for it and am having a blast.

The wii also has FPS games like Call of Duty 3, where you hold the wiimote like a gun. Quite enjoyable.

I didn't bother with a 360 cause my roommate that Ill be moving in with at the end of the summer has one, and the PS3 just doesn't have any games out yet. From what I heard, unless you are using it for blue ray movie playback it is a giant paper weight right now.

I'll probably end up building a new PC by the end of the year though. I'm impatiently waiting for the new amd processors to get announced/released.

so... over this weekend i've had unfettered access to a 360 and all the time in the world to mess around with it. been playing games like gears of war, call of duty 2, forza motorsports, rainbow six vegas. also played a very brief demo for perfect dark zero.

overall i have to say, it hasn't been amazing. i'd probably go more for a Wii now than anything. gears of war i am utterly unimpressed with. the multiplayer seems a bit fun (thanks chrono & apoc) but i really dislike the movement system in the game. plus, i'm by myself for part of the weekend, and i'm finding that i can't start a new singleplayer campaign without deleting the progress of the guy whose 360 it is. is this right? that just seems wrong. you can only have one single player mission going at a time? BS. that's going back in time to SNES level of memory abilities. i found the same problem with rainbow six, and call of duty 2. crap.

call of duty 2 was fun, but almost ridiculously easy. i played through it on the hard levels unknowingly and breezed by. this was after only about 20 minutes of ever holding a 360 controller. started playing on veteran, but wasn't really interested anymore.

by contrast, rainbow six vegas is difficult to the point of frustration. i haven't played previous games of this style so maybe that's part of it, but i felt like no matter what i did, a terrorist would pop out and waste me. only way to progress was to learn what's going to happen from previous deaths.

forza motorsports was really fun, and the cars look great. i'm not much of a racing game guy though, so it didn't hold my interest very long. seems like it had an easy learning curve but plenty of room for better players as well.

and perfect dark zero. when i heard this was coming out for the 360 i pretty much said crap, i have to get a 360 now. the demo was okay. a basic single player mission which was fun, but nothing new. multiplayer had interesting aspects. big level, and sims, thank god. (i'll never understand why other FPS games don't include the option of sims.) but am i supposed to be impressed with 25 weapons? 14 single player missions? the original had way more of each. secondary functions of weapons weren't as good either, from what i saw. i'll stick with the original.

the other game i was really looking forward to was elder scrolls: oblivion. i had access to it, but i didn't want to start in on that. too huge for just a weekend, i'd say. plus, i've heard some not so great things about that too. always scaling treasure? bah.

in any event, the Wii looks better and better with every passing day. price tag is friendlier as well. either that or go for the old PS2 and hook up with some of the games i missed out on by doing the xbox.

As an added bonus, you can pick up some of the old classics as a download for dirt cheap. I'm impatiently waiting for the old NES Metroid to get released. Presently Im loving Zelda's Twighlight Princess and SSX Blur. And yea, for two of the sword attacks you do swing the wiimote. Great games and will keep me busy till Smash Brothers and the Resident Evil 4 port show up.

Also, it hasn't happened yet, but Nintendo is promising interoperability between the DS handheld and the Wii. Not sure if you have one, but thought I'd mention it since a lot of people who have one have the other (eventually) as well.

Always scaling treas in Oblivion? I wish...

or perhaps at level 34 I'm just not so impressed by a chest containing 84 Septims anymore... or one with a Potion of Heal and a Potion of Magic...

Must get expansion pack... going through Oblivion Withdrawl...

heh. okay, so you're too high. what i heard about it was that you can't be 'clever' at early levels to get better stuff, because at low levels, you're always going to find rags, no matter the chest you open. i think a better system would be to design the game to reward clever gameplay, not discourage it by making treasure react to the player. just make players earn it.

anyway, i could be dead wrong, i've obviously never played it. i played a lot of morrowind and loved the largeness and expanse of the world. (though it wasn't cool you couldn't get a mount. i understand they fixed that.) anyway, you recommend it, yes?

And now I am getting a 360. I'll be picking it up tomorrow most likely. My priority is figuring out how to best connect it to my computer's monitor (Ive got a 2405FPW, so audio is a bit of a head scratcher at the moment as my stereo is not in my room).

I was going to hold off for the eventual revision that was supposed to come out this summer. But there is no sign of it anywhere to be seen AND I found out the other day that almost all the newer models are quiet b/c they finally switched to a BenQ type dvd player.

As for games, what finally tipped the scales for me to get the 360 is Transformers. I honestly want to push a button on my controller and transform into a car and drive around. How dorky is that? hehe The used game section at my Gamespot has gotten quite a lot of 360 games recently as well. So I am going to pick up Gears of War and either Dead Rising or something else depending on what catches my eye. Any recommendations?

Dead Rising is great fun, though the different endings are a bit dull...finally got the continuation ending and stopped playin cause the zombies kinda drop of the radar. FIFA is great, smee and I constantly battle it out on the field with anguish and delight a constant Gears of War is fun but only when you've got another player with you or you play it in the hard setting, otherwise its just a bit tedious.

So I also got a Wii. In july anyway. I've been meaning to write here about it since then and just haven't. My evaluation: It's fun as hell. If anyone would like to exchange wii ID numbers, PM me.

    First, the cons:
-The graphics are pretty terrible for this generation of console.
-Game selection could be expanded for more adult audience.
-Little initial memory; upgrade needs $.
-Peripherals are expensive. Controllers with nunchuk cost the same amount or more than a game.

    Pros:
-Most fun i've had on a console in a long time.
-Many control schemes are intuitive and easy to learn. (not all, but most i've encountered.)
-Fun for all ages. My parents, who are video game challenged, had a blast.
-Virtual console for access to old Nintendo games. Sweet.
-Did i mention it's crazy fun?

So far i have Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports, and Rayman Rabbids (or whatever it is).

I liked Mario Galaxy a lot, but i like mario games in general so i'm probably biased. It is amazingly similar to the N64 mario game. I can't compare to gamecube version. There are some quirks with the wiimote, but they aren't really central, and the same game could probably have been accomplished on an older console. Still, i found it quite enjoyable to play through.

Wii Sports is quite fun for a while, then must be taken in small doses. After initially playing it all the time, i've settled down on it, and play only once in a while. Still quite fun, and it utilizes the wiimote controls in fun ways. The graphics aren't there at all, but it should be obvious graphics don't matter much to me anyway. There is a lot of design space that was seemingly ignored though. Stuff like being able to choose different equipment or different courts/courses/fields, more control for things like tennis (where you can't control where you stand) or baseball (no baserunning, no fielding, no nothing except pitching and batting).

As Buck said above, Rayman is great fun, and the first one is a cheap-o game at 20 bucks when i got it new. Weird minigames make for a fun party game. Can be frustrating at times though. Definitely uses the control scheme in interesting ways. Cow-tossing anyone? How about whack-a-bunny? And yes, the pseudo-FPS-style bunny elimination with plungers is fun as well. It's fun, but i would suspect Mario Party 8 (i think it's 8) is probably more so and better developed.

Of these Mario Kart Wii is above and beyond. As with previous versions, it's a great time whether you're playing by yourself or with a group. Online play with others is available as well. Good stuff there for beginners and experts alike, and plenty of unlockables and combinations. I'm not wild about the motorcycles, but i think that's because the bots use them better than i do.

Next games: Zelda, GHOSTBUSTERS (when it comes out), Smash Bros., Wario ware smooth moves, Wii fit (it looks fun to me, shut up apoc), guitar hero (ack, my wife wants this), no more heroes, metroid prime 3. That should keep me busy.

A final word. Like it or not, this is the future of console gaming. I can guarantee that if others want to compete with Nintendo, they're going to have to do some motion sensing tech for their next-gen stuff.

PS3 has motion sensing...you don't know the fun of heavenly sword's twing twang its fckn awesome.

and i totally disagree with you that the Wii is the future of console gaming...it'll forever be the child and non-gamer friendly cheap alternative to the 360 and ps3. Just wacky childish fun, nothing more. The ps3 and 360 will always be the gamers consoles of choice...and the Wii will be foreveryone else.

Soul sucking piece of shit that it is. You have a real dog why do you need a virtual one...go outside oor pick up a hollahoop if you want to exercize not a scale that comes with an aerobics dvd...and i your a fan of the wacky little games why don't you just play them for free online? they're better quality online!

    gah...

    *clears throat*

Pardon me sir, but hardcore gamers pride themselves on having a 360 and/or a PS3 as well as the Wii as well as a PC.

I wouldn't so quickly dismiss Wii games as just "wacky childish fun, nothing more". A lot of the cross platform games have been hitting the Wii as well, and in some cases the Wii version ends up being a bit of a unique twist due to the Wiimote.

Resident Evil 4 is good example of this. The Wii version is promoted as the superior of the bunch. The Virtual Console also has a bunch of classics.

Don't get me wrong, of all the consoles I personally think that the 360 is the most superior. 90%+ of the time cross platform games are better on the 360 and the 360s game library is much better. PC versions are all over the place, sometimes much better, sometimes shoddy ports with little optimization.

I'd say the Wii wins overall b/c it appeals to all audiences, not just "non-gamers".
