And yeah, the virtual stuff is what will end up making or breaking this--mostly--for me. While I love how big 3e is...its also so big it can't hold up. There are so many choices in so many places, there is no way to even keep track of it. I've tried, on two occasions, to make a simple reference document for it...and it was way too much. If 4e can give me that volume of material and keep it together (in the rules database and character builder that are supposed to be a part of DDI)...then that would be worth its weight in gold.
As for the format of the PHB2 and so on, I'm not sure. I'd guess they will almost surely be hardbacks tho probably not with the page count (and hopefully cost) of the the PHB. So...dunno...
And its hard to say the DDI has flopped when it hasn't been released yet. Granted, there is a HUGE concern the whole thing becomes vaporware...
