    Default Harry Potter

We had a classic talk about superheroes and special abilities the other day, and during the conversation I came out of the closet and found my side of a fence I've been balancing on the top of for quite a while.

f1 - Wolverine. I actually think... Wolverine. Badass.
f2 - Yeah, I don't know, I find most of them pretty lame
f1 - Like superman! That's just dull, you know, and what's so super about having this rock that will kill you?
f3 - Actually, I've always fantasized more about doing magic than being a superhero
f2 - You mean, running around like Harry Potter or something
Me - Haha, Harry Potter, that system of magicking is retarded
f1 - System of... Oh my god, please tell me you did not say that. Please!
    f2 - wow
    f3 - jeeeesus

So umm, yeah, I think it's official, I'm a geek.

LOL I must be a geek too because my first reaction is to push my metaphorical glasses on, grab a notepad and say "Very interesting, may I ask you what it is you find retarded about the Harry Potter system of magicking?"

Well, if I may be frank, geeko a geeko; it's the way it's bound to spells that you have to say, or think really focused about or whatnot. Not very sexy, I think not.

Also, of course, there's the wands. Waving little sticks around? Very fruity.

You know, I always rather liked it. Very sensible form of magicking. LOL although I suppose it isn't sexy, who said magic has to be sexy, magic is a serious business after all.

i am. Potter magic is for girls and pansy's who don't like to actually kill muthafckers who are coming after them and their friends...their magics just don't bring the pain i'd want to see on my enemies faces

Apoc would just stabbity stab stab someone with his wand or club them with it.

i'm pretty sure apoc already has that magic, but probably doesn't use a wand for it.

also, and this may break this thread even more, but.... i have read all of the harry potters, and beyond whether you prefer or not the aesthetics of HP magic, there are legitimate complaints to be made about J.K. Rowling sort of retconning the magic system. it seemed obvious to me that she hadn't thought a great deal about the mechanics of magic prior to writing. it was just magic, and then all of a sudden the mechanics of it mattered to the story.

Surely it would be it be "Cephalus Explodus", "Patella Destructo" and "Omnimortis Expeditus"?

    What joy!

I would also like to point out that I actually like the books quite a bit -mainly the stating the spells things annoy me

In other nerdy news I spent the last couple of hours at work today wandering around the internets and happened upon a quite entertaining, albeit old, review of the malazan books on idon'tquiteremembersalemorsomething -it was fun to read but then in the middle he dissed Jordan in the same breath as Eddings. Say what you will about RJ and the later books... umm... tardiness, but being compared to dread Eddings he deserves not.

yeeek what were they thinking. Eddings is cute and good for kids if you ask me. On the surface RJ's stories may appear to lack depth (orphan farmboy goes on quest to save humanity using his messianic powers) but it simply doesn't. RJ patterned his story with so much rich and delicious detail. It's definately up there with all the best fantasy fiction if you ask me, despite the tragedy of his getting lost in all that detail somewhere along the way (I say around book seven or eight).

I could never get into Erikson, he sort of made me queasy with all the black frothy limb loss, and I didn't really relate to any of the characters. He lost me by the end of the first book.
