Radio can be annoying that way. I miss the type of program that would say "hey, you know these dudes that made the killer single niggas in paris? Well, turns out that single comes from a decent album, so now, in stead of niggas in paris, you'll get..."

Anyway. Most of the time, I keep 200-300 songs on my iPod, som new some old, that I listen to the shuffle way. It's a pretty random selection, and I change it every other day (ooh, this must be so interesting -I'll get to the point ). I also listen to a few podcasts (xlr8r is a must have free one!) So... everytime I've listened to a podcast and goes back to songs I press shuffle and the sequence start over. Now, the last three days I've listened to about 140 songs, which would mean I should be just halfway through all the songs, but for some reason and statistical fluke, this song has been played no less than 11 times! Fascinating! What does it mean?

Eyre. I need someone like you to wander around beside me and muse about things all day. It's highly entertaining. Bonus: when I smile at my own silent musings, I'll look slightly less crazy.

This isn't actually new, but someone dropped a tip for me today and I checked it out. Maybe you've heard of it, maybe not, but it's worth a peek Oh, and it's not music, but music-related

I know -and I was instantly saddened as I am pretty much always submerged in my own iPod selection (which features many a less talented musician!) when walking these places, and would, with 99% surety, just walk past...

    Now, a real classic:

Oh...Also not much but music related:

Thinking of doing a blog for my internship where I propose the idea of banishing genres. I think we've started using them as adjectives to describe music. I wonder if genres are causing us (or more importantly, less musically eclectic people) to miss out on bands because they're being "described" by a genre that they don't 100% fit in.

Obviously, it'll change the way awards are given and the charts are done. But, is that necessarily a bad thing?

    Thoughts? Hm?

One biographically intriguing fact about Bell is that he got his first music lessons when he was a 4-year-old in Bloomington, Ind. His parents, both psychologists, decided formal training might be a good idea after they saw that their son had strung rubber bands across his dresser drawers and was replicating classical tunes by ear, moving drawers in and out to vary the pitch.

Go then, there are other worlds than these.

You will know exactly who you are, forever, by knowing what it is that you love.

I think you are right that we are more and more using genres as adjectives, but I don't know if doing away with them would help. I mean, for me, no problem (I can't really imagine people browsing music by genre anyway -or yes, I can but I don't want to picture it), I'm about as faithful to genres as Glenn Beck is to the truth, but for those other people, as you say, can't it be an asset too? I mean, if the dude at you local music place (or, more likely, whomever is labeling music at iTunes and Spotify) is good at thinking about genres broadly and inclusively, then the genre-browser can discover some really neat stuff, even though he's just there to check out the "Rock" section. My point would be that it kind of works both ways, no?

But it's an interesting thing, and you know there is something out of lag when you suddenly have to deal with "genres" like:

    Folk-rap
    Speed reggae
    Techno-metal

Charts I could see without genres, after all they could be labelled after release date, country of origin or whatever, but awards? Heh, it would be kind of great though, to have an award show with just one award. Best music goes to...

But it's an interesting point, keep me posted on your thoughts. Also, I'm not sure if I posted this guy here before, but I think he's pretty neat:

This, Dear Sir, is your finest moment. Love it.

So, I'd been putting off finishing that blog for two weeks. But I finally did it and sent it in this morning. ...I'll share a link with you once my editor posts it. I decided we couldn't get rid of genres for, actually, the exact opposite reasons you listed. I think it would be harder on the charts, then awards shows. We could come up with other awards, but the charts...things like the Independent Chart and the "World" chart...even Rock often feature bands that won't ever make it onto the top 200 chart. So...yeah. Plus, Jesus. Can you imagine radio if we banned genres? It'd be even more ridic that it is now.

Josh Ritter. I cant remember if you've posted him before or not, either. But I say he's worthy of being posted again!

    Triggerfinger - I follow rivers.

A very strong cover of the original. I like the cup percusion quite a lot

    Sweet!

    Something else that's sweet :

On that note, ever been to the tomorrowland festival, mister Corax? Is it any good? (I mean, the lineup looks pretty awesome, but that's not always a guarantee a festival is going to be cool...)
