What are you reading and what do you think of it?

Right now I'm reading Dreamcatcher by Stephen King.

I was at the book store and saw the hardcover on clearance for $5.99, so I figured "What the hell?" I haven't heard many great things about the book, but I'm liking it so far. Then again, I'm only half way through it. I haven't seen the movie yet, but people have told me the movie's ending is far different from the book's ending. Which is typical of Hollywood.

I'm also in the middle of re-reading The Death Gate Cycle, by Weis and Hickman. I was on book 5, The Hand of Chaos, but now I have a few NEW books to read, so that's on hold. I love this series though. One of my favorite things is how the authors tie this world in with some of the other fantasy worlds they've helped create. Like the character Zifnab. "Have you seen my hat?" I think this is the third time I've read these books. Or is it the fourth? ~shrugs~

mmm Death Gate Cycle very good.

Well for school, reading A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M Miller Jr. Basically a sci-fi take on the origins of Catholicism in a post apocalyptic earth...well the rebirth of it. Pretty good so far.

Though for fun, just starting The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. So many people have read it and recommended it so I thought I'd give it a go.

I'm on a Re-read of LotR in anticipation of Dec. 17th. After that, well....who knows.

The Iliad by Homer

Though I know the story very well, I had never read the book. I'm quite near the end and so far all I can say is wow!

Achillies is sooo HARD. I found the part with Patroclus very sad but I absolutely love the magnificence of the characters. Diomedeis is my favourite, that whole chapter were he's slaughtering the Trojans is one of the greatest I've ever read and the one were they are fighting over Patroclus' body.

So many great characters, the Ajax brothers kick ass, Agamemnon is leaderlike and admits his faults, Odyseus is also a great but it is the Trojan general Hector that makes this book so great for me, he is a good guy fighting for a mistake by the prettyboy Paris.

Many details of the great battles of Ilium make you truly believe it was a real event, the fight between the gods is a massive bonus that adds humour, almighty strength but great sadness aswell.

My favourite part so far was when Diomedeis squared up too the War God Ares, brilliant.

I'm reading Assasins Apprentice by Robin Hobb. Good so far, nothing earthmoving tho.

weird...i wrote a huge reply to this...i must have gotten side tracked and never submitted it.

i just finished reading d.h. lawrence's sons and lovers. it was funny, because my mom thought i would LOVE lawrence with the same passion and fury that i love nabokov. but i founnd that it had its moments, and i certainly enjoyed it, and i'm sure if i had decided to delve into it's literary depths i might have enjoyed it more, but as it was, overall, it was only good. but i'm not giving up on lawrence yet. i will try lady chatterly's lover, since in its day it was considered pornographic, it might be more than just moments of word love.

at the moment, i'm reading the snow leopard. i've been reading it for a long time, but it's one of those books that you can just take your time with because its the language you're reading for, not the story. it's a literary nonfiction book...the author's wife just died, and he's on a biological expedition to the himalyas with a biologist who wants to find out if these sheep/goats are really sheep or goats, and so they have to go in rutting season...but the author is going because there's buddhist monastery, and he's buddhist, and the head monk is supposedly very very enlightened. also, he hopes to see the snow leopard who lives in the area. and his journey to find the snow leopard sort of becomes metaphorical for his journey to enlightenment. it's beautifully written and highly interesting.

Well after finishing the brilliant Iliad, I had no new books so I went back to the one I always abandon- SoT book 2 Stone of Tears and wow it actually got quite goo in the last few chapters but will it last....umm.. not likely.

I wonder if I can finish it without starting another instead, oh challenge.

i'm reading "portuguese irregular verbs" by... crap, i can't find it again. this is why it's taken me a week to get halfway through it. anyway, described in one word; delightful.

this is one of the funniest books i've read in a long time. by the end of the first chapter i had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard

That is an excellent book. I'm impressed that you get to read that for a class. I am also a little mad that I didn't get to read it in one of my many lit classes.

Right now it's Abarat by Clive Barker for me. I plan on doign an extensive reveiw of it somewhere here soon, so be on the look out.

Also, any of you kids open to walk into a comic store and pick up the newest great thing should go grab up Conan #0. It's only 25 cents and it is gorgeous. The series starts in Febuary, when it comes, you should grab it up too.

Right now I'm finishing book 3 of the Dark Tower and I'm planning on reading LotR again since it's been...well, years. I'm interested to see if I interpret the books differently now.

There are some books I used to have as a kid that got lost somehow. I want to get them again and read them, because I know I loved them and read them ragged all those years ago. One set was the Chronicles of Narnia. My interest in these rekindled when I heard they're making another movie out of them. And Watership Down, by Richard Adams. Something about those rabbits...
