Default Great characters of Fantasy literature

So who are your favourite characters, say why you like them and any best moments if you ike.

My top 5 go as follows:

1:Faramir from lotr:Captain/prince of Ithilien of Gondor. I absolutely fell in love with this character, best moment-surprising every reader by not falling to the rings lure and letting Frodo go. Though the film changed his character somewhat he is still my fave.

2:Achilles from The Iliad:Greeces greatest warrior/son of the goddess Thetis. He is so renowned throughout the start of the book yet he doesn't do any fighting, he sits in a sulk until Patroclus falls, then we see just how hard this character really is. The angriest character in literature for sure. I hope brad pitt pulls it off.best moment: Hector vs Achilles.

3:Sandor Clegane/The Hound from aSoIaF:King Joffreys bodyguard and then kingsguard. So ruthless, hard and angry. Though he was only a secondary char, he stood out greatly.best moment: Saving Sansa Stark from the rioting mob.

4:Shigeru from Across the Nightingale Floor: Lord of the Otori. Everything a good guy should be and more. Best moment:the forbidden love chapter.

5:Moraine Damodred from WoT: Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah. Brave in the face of everything thats thrown at her from Rand being an idiot to one of the forsaken. Best moment:Lanfear/doorway need I say more?

FitzChivalry Farseeer from the Farseeer thriology and the Tawnee man thriology:

Not an extremely good character, he has his flaws of character, but that makes him even more believable as a character. In the first thriology he shows what it means to make sacrifices for your king and country. His suffering touched my heart. He matured very much before the last thriology. Best moment: the night he gets arrested while killing off the murderers of the king.

Pug ConDoin (temporarily Millamber) in the Riftwar saga:

The basic magician hero, growing up with problems, but becomming one of the greatest of them all. He became so powerfull that he had to be written out of the series for a bit, to keep the series somewhat exciting. Best moment: Him getting mad in the arena. "That you have lived as you have lived for centuries
is no license for this cruelty. All here are now judged, and all are found wanting. You who would take pleasure from the death and dishonor of others, see then how well you face destruction! Tremble and despair, for I am Power!"

    Some of my favorites, hmmm....

Raistlin from Dragonlance. Granted this isn't the greatest series of books ever, but you've got to love Raistlin's character. You never quite knew what he was going to do: be a hero or a grade-A bastard. Pretty much everything he did, he did for himself, and he didn't try to hide it behind some noble intention like most fantasy heroes do. It made him very believable to me.

Roland of Gilead. Another flawed "hero." My favorite type. Roland seems to be about as lovable as a brillo pad, but once you really get to know him, to know the fact that he has that deeply romantic core combined with the aching sadness of losing a love, you start to care more and more about him and his "quest."

Zifnab, the Death Gate Cycle. I just had to put Zifnab here. Zifnab beats 'em all.

Anyways, that's all for now. Perhaps I'll post a couple more later.

well, he's not a character from literature, but i'm going to list him anyway, because i just watched this episode last night, but

Doyle, from television's Angel. given visions of evil that's about to occur from the Powers That Be, he lived a life of gambling, drinking, and general bad-boy-ness, revelling in his selfishness until the day (the same day that he revealed his secrets and gained acceptance from a woman he loved) that he realized that some things are more important than living to see another day and sacrificed his life to save dozens of others.

also, i would say, Lestat, from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. A rogue, an actor, a passionate vampire questing for knowledge, he always surprises and somehow does that wrong thing but makes it all work out.

Tyrion Lannister from aSoIaF, one of my favorite characters because he is so cool, creative.... best moment: end of SoS, when he kills a certain person

Fitz from the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogy because he is so believable and real. best moment: so many... maybe when he wakes the Elderlings...

Raistlin from Dragonlance: so evil and cool, but still shows good qualities.

for humor: Vimes from Discworld. best moment: all of Night Watch

Yay I love Doyle too! He was so cool, and I love Cordelia in that episode when she finally finds out he's half demon, after he's kept it hidden from her so long.

"What do you think I am? Shallow or something? Hello! Demon is way down on the list, way below short and poor for instance."

lol or it was something like that. My memory isn't great at quotes.

    Some of my favourites:

Fuschia from the Gormenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake. Wow I loved her for her flights of fancy and her tragic stupidity. Her cross temper and her whimsy. I recomend those books to anyone who hasn't read them. Her best moment, it's been so long since I read these books, but she's great whenever she's scribbling on her bedroom wall.

Jaime Lannister, from Game of Thrones, (I think its funny how everyone has a different favourite from these books. I love to ask people who their favourite is from these books cos the answers almost always insightful into the persons own character). His best moment, whenever he's is showing tenderness towards Tyrion. And Also when everything goes wrong for him, then he becomes very interesting.

Jessica Atreides from Dune. All I can say about this woman is "class!" Best moment is when her and Paul crash in the desert and must run from the worms across the desert.

Anita Blake from the Anita Blake, vampire hunter novels. She is so cool, and so very very easy to identify with, which is, I think, what makes these books so popular. I love how she's episcopalian too. It's so very very rare to find religious characters nowadays. It's almost as if its a taboo subject. Best moment, whenever she's pulling a gun on a cop who's pissing her off. Which is often

Arilyn Moonblade she was first introduced in The Harper Series by a fantasy book line cant for the life of me remember the name. Elaine Cunningham is the author and she ROCKS.

I also like Danilo Thann but only with Arilyn, they need each other and Im happy they are together. **sighs heavily**

    Elfshadow.

I'm a big fan of Danilo Thann, myself.

Of course, my favorite is from the same world, Drizzt.

    One 'I' in Drizzt...

Yeah, I just thought you were reaching for a name of one of the books, I guess I don't know what the series is called...

Dreamspheres wasn't very good, either, IMO.

    And Drizzt is better

Oh, I have a new favourite character and its another Shigeru, but this ones from Cloud of Sparrows and not the one from Across The Nightingale Floor

Shigeru from Cloud of Sparrows: Samurai and Uncle to Lord Genji.Totally insane, he's mad for the first half of the book, then he gets slightly cured but he is by far the greatest Samurai. Best moment: 1 against 25...not good odds, they were too few to fight Shigeru.
