My favorite character when I started reading fantasy was Mat (WoT). But after reading aSoIaF... nothing compares with characters like Tyrion, Jon, Arya, and Dany. They all have moments when you think they're incredibly stupid, others when they seem really cool. That makes great characters.
best moments- Dany: getting the dragons from the pyre
    Tyrion: same one lost said
    Jon: being made lord commander
Arya: mainly seeing how much she has grown throughout the books

If I had to choose a character from another series, I'd pick Fitz. I think my favorite part was him going back to look for the Fool's body and then resurrecting it, and then them parting. I seriously almost cried at those parts, tho it may have been because it was around 2:00 in the morning (I couldn't stop reading...).

That was a nice moment indeed, but I sometimes wondered:

I would have found it more fitting if he was to replace Chade in some way instead of the whole Happy Ending thingy that happened in the last book. it was so out of tune with the rest of the book. Ok, you might see it as the result of killing off the White Lady, which could result in his happyness, but I thought it wasn't realy fitting with the rest of the series. To me it felt like the whole Happy Ending was added on later, to get rid of the character the writer herself came to feel pitty for, or something like that (who knows how the mind of an author works?). I would have felt better if he went looking for the Fool, that whole thing happened and he was left behind to follow Chade in his footsteps.

But overall it is indeed one of the best characters to follow in fantasy, since you are almost forced into feeling pitty for the poor little bugger. An example of true sacrifice.

Edit: I am under the influence of large quantities of ye ol' alcohol while writing this reply, please don't take too much notice.

" And very angry, of course."

I don't know if you considr manga fantasy literiture but i have to nominate my man Guts from Berserk. He and regular human who fight supernatual foes on a ragular basis and wins. Plus his sword is bigger than he is. Definately a favorite of mine.

Elric of Melnibone is hands down my fav....I've got a thing for the anti- hero.
(plus I find the idea of weilding a black, soul-sucking sword appealing)

Sonja Blue -although she's really part of the Horror genre (And I think she kicks Anita Blake's ass)

Moiraine Damodred - another lady in blue (best character in the series as far as I'm concerned)

Driz'zt Do'Urden and Jarlaxle - the best damn drow characters ever written.

The adaptation of "Phantom Menace" really made Darth Maul an even better character.

wow...what a differance 3 years make...heh i can't think of reading now without comparing everything thats gone before and every other series i've read to a certain awesome series that just sits above and beyond all others...i'm of course talking the malazan books :broken:

1: Simple...its gotta be Coltaine from the malazan book 2 Deadhouse Gates. The Wickan Fist of the 7th Army going through the chain of dogs. Best moment...the finale (greatest scene EVER!)
2: Cotillion...patron god of assassins from all the malazan books...when Kalam fights alongside him was fantastic but i think the end of bonehunters where cotillion shows a side of him that was relatively...unexpected.
3: Harlest...from malazan book 5 midnight tides...one of my favourite moments of the entire series is what he's spotted doing whilst Iron Bars is fighting the five toblakai.
4: Karsa Orlong...Toblakai...from malazan book 4 House of Chains...the hardest muthafcker ever and the meanest..."Witness!" mwhahahahah greatest scene..."Hounds of darkness aye?" and the moment when he runs into a certain sick paedophile freak heheh there ain't no justice like karsa justice.
5: Tehol Beddict and his manservant Bugg...from the malazan book 5 Midnight Tides...every moment with these two is just sheer delight, hysterical. Best moment...a nice wee revelation by Bugg.

gah...that was bloody difficult...and not a bridgeburner (quick ben, fidd, kalam, whiskeyjack, paran etc etc) or a crimson guard (Iron Bars) or a seguleh amoungst them...gah the whole casts of each book are just sooo awesome. Kruppe I didn't mention Kruppe! Nor Kettle...nor ahhhh soo many...too many and they outclass every character from every other series by leagues!
