~SPLIT FROM THE GREAT CHARACTERS OF FANTASY LITERATURE THREAD~

Jean-Claude, Anita Blake series, by Laurell K Hamilton
Gotta love a french accented master vampire who oozes so much lust you have to wipe your hands every time you turn a page. He hops back & forth over the line of good and evil so often it makes me dizzy. He's always got something up his sleeve, has a strange sense of humour, he's powerful, hedonistic, intelligent, devastatingly sexy and you know you can trust him with your life, but can you trust him with your heart??? (it depends which book you're reading, hehe)

Wow it's amazing how two people can look at the same character and see totally different things. I hated Jean-Claude from the first time I met. Always so sly and sneaking. I don't think I've ever forgiven Anita Blake for getting to gether with him. I would have respected her more if she would have stuck to her polocy of "I don't date vampires, I kill them."

hedonist?? Well, it holds to form that the asswhole superpowerful vampire gets the girl, while the only person with any morals at all in the whole series, the superpowerful niceguy werewolf doesn't.

Aww, c'mon, it's his choice not to be with her as of the second to last book (havent read the current hardcover yet) If he could agree to an open relationship...
Anyway, I think the point is that a man needs to have a nice balance between the two personalities. A who gets all dressed up and takes his woman out on the town, with a penchant for the outrageous and decadent, and also likes to stay home on a sunday and watch old movies and go for hikes and stuff...
A girl shouldnt HAVE to choose!

How is it an open relationship if she get's to screw like 10 different guys but he only has one girl?? I think she just want's to have her cake and eat it too. I actually respected Richard much more cause he wouldn't agree to it.

Also a charcter I forgot to list is Edward, he's definatly the coolest person in that series. He spot assasinating human and move on to killing mosters cause killing humans was too easy. Now that's cool

no, it was just a matter of her & the two boyz. How far along are you in the series, cause until Narcissus in Chains, until Micah, she wasnt screwing anyone but Richard & Jean-Claude.
and dont forget, her choice originally was Richard over anyone else. She just couldnt handle the whole eating people thing .

You know, we could start a whole thread about this discussion (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

<edit> Oh, and totally agree with you on the Edward thing. LOVE him. He's so cool. He's like the personification of cool. Love his sense of humor, too. And his idea of the perfect gift.

oh yes, edward is awesome. and i don't know, i found Richard was always too annoyingly whiny and not accepting of who and what he was. Whereas Jean Claude is a sleazy, evil mutha who knows it and is ok with that. But richard and anita would have been good together if not for jean claude because they are both so uptight and yet completely out of bounds that they suit eachother.

I always liked it that Anita and Jean Claude got together, at first, because it's such a forbidden love (in spite of his godawful clothes ).

And i just always wish that anita would take a look and realize that she's dating a vampire and a werewolf, so she can probably stop thinking of everyone as bad guys. So many of her "situations" are a direct result of her trigger-happiness. tsk. no matter what happens, she tries to kill someone. She can barely survive a day without threatening someone's life! it's like

    dude: ~looks at Anita funny~
anita: "i'll blow your guts out, torture you, murder your family and eat your liver for breakfast if you don't read my mind and be polite in the exact manner i desire. you look at me, you play by my rules, which change momentarily and aren't published."
    dude:~dies, bloodily~

    but i still like her.

Actually I've read the whole series,I think my sister's really into them and she turned me onto it. Jean Claude miniplulates everyone he comes in contact with to gain more power. He a chacter who should be a villian but some how he one of the good guys, and that kinda bothers me also. I think I would like him better if he was more evil.

I like Richard so much cause he seem to stand out in the whole series. Every single charcter you come across in the series is either strong and will kill in a second, or weak and needs to be protected. Richard is the only exception he's as strong as anyone in the series but his refusing to kill makes him really stand out. His stants on this is a real hadicap to being the leader of the tribe but he does it anyway Instead of taking the easy way out he chooses the hard way.

As for Anita she has seem to have gone from being on of the good guys to being one of the monsters. Which is why I haven't like it as much recently.

Heh, seems like the things that you dont like about the series are the things that are interesting to me. I like that Anita's character is evolving, altho I agree she's not evolving in the ideal direction. I kind of wish her time away from everyone had given her a clearer perspective on things, but it seems to have served mostly just to help her gain more control over her powers.

I like that JC is not all evil, it gives him depth. Also more realistic, no one is all evil or all good. Maybe thats what turns me off about Richard, he seems more one dimentional.

Not that I dislike Richard, cause I dont at all. I admire his ideals and really hope his attempts to turn the pack around work. Now that he's getting "more organized" shall we say (dont want to give too much away) hopefully things will begin to turn more his way. I just wish he'd come to terms with his relationship with Anita, either agree to meet her halfway or to truly put her behind him and begin to really accept her in the role she now serves for him.

Oh, I also really really like Rafael. He's a great character. I hope to see more of the rats in upcoming books. More rats and more Edward, thats what I'm hoping for.

JC doesn't have to be all evil, just more evil. Actually I think he was more evil and Anita's influence has tamed him some. As for Anita I would admire her more if her enviorment hadn't changed her so much. In the begining she wouldn't even have considered going out with a monster. Now she bangs 3 different ones on a regular basis(4 if you count Richard). I just bothers me.

As for the whole Richard, JC thing I think what really bothers me is to see the girl choose the badboy over the nice guy. It happens enough in real life that I wish it didn't happen in fiction also.

I agree with Magatsu, although perhaps not as vehemiently. I thought Richard was way sexier than JC as well. And it seems ridiculous to dump a guy for killing and eating someone you wanted to kill yourself anyway, for a guy who sucks peoples blood everyday. Like I am all into the irrational side of Anita, but that just didn't add up to me... but then I've noticed alot New Zealanders take great offense at cannibalism which stems from the Maori culture of it being the ultimate insult. Maybe Anita has a touch of that attitude. Or I guess she just really wanted JC, and was looking for an excuse to choose him. Which is actually the most likely explanation.

I don't think JC is sexy at all. Edward however.. whoh! He's definately my favourite male character.

i think i like him because he's not so evil. In fact, sometimes, i like him more than i like Anita, because she often fails to see that JCs actions are not motivated by sex/hunger/evil, but more out of responsibility to his people. He's like a king or maybe more to the point, like a CEO. he has to make a lot of tough decisions and ultimately, he's a business man.

the only problem i have with all the changes Anita has gone through is that fundamentally, she hasn't gone through any. She still despises the monsters, just feels somewhat responsible for them, still sees herself as separate from them, and for all that she's been through, she's still terrified of becoming all furry. i mean. uh, chickee, you've gotta chill. you date were-beasties. you lead them. you're friends with them. you live with them. surely you still can't be that prejudiced and afraid to truly become one of them. I just never understand why she even tries to pretend that she's normal and all. her lack of abilty to acccept the obvious kind of annoys me. that and her attitude that everything is a threat. She's so afraid of everything! But Jean Claude, i like and respect because he does what he needs to do and doesn't lose too much sleep over it. and for the most part, for the situations he's put into, he makes not-too-bad choices that Anita totally blows out of proportion. i still need to read cerulean sins, the last book, waiting for it to be in paperback, but Anita has been annoying me for the last few books. She's become kinda like ally mcbeal ... the annoying character who allows you to meet all kinds of interesting and cool characters that play backup to her.
