Here's a few of my new friends from January.
Sorry about the appalling delay, but I didn't take these pictures and the scanner is too retarded for my regular pics.

i thought foxes were the enemy (not by any fault of their own, of course)? cute pics though, both quolls and fox![]()
I don't have anything against foxes, in fact I have a fairly healthy respect for them. Doesn't change the fact they're destructive and need to be controlled though. But yeah, Penfold was a good looking animal.Originally Posted by James

it must be hard for you, liking them and yet having to "control" them. i know you feel strongly about what you do, and that it is the right thing to do, needs to be done, and i applaud you and your colleagues for it, but still... it sucks that it does need to be done because of what people have done in the pastOriginally Posted by Dregs
just out of curiosity, what's your opinion on the views of some people that nature should simply be left to sort things out for herself, regardless of cases where we fucked things up? asdie from it being irresponsible and uncaring, i mean, do you think/know it would work in an extreme sort of way, that things would balance out, or that it would just be a case of us fucking things up completely by not trying?
huh wha que wtf?
here I was thinking this would be a place to post pics of scary monsters and what do I find....cute animals!
~wants to post scary pics of monsters and stuff now and see what peeps of the quill think scary....but can't be bothered making a new thread~

I'm aware of these arguments, Tim Flannery being one of the bigger proponents, but I don't know that we can get away with it. If we are going to use the land and the forests and the animals as a resource, then we need to manage that resource in such a way as to make it sustainable. I don't think we are currently, especially in Australia.Originally Posted by James
Its not as though we can draw a line on a map and call it "wilderness" or even make it a national park, and then believe its somehow seperate from the bits that we occupy as a species. It hasn't worked in the last 200 years in this country, so why would we expect it to now?
As for nature taking care of itself, this is true to an extent. But it would only be true if we left it alone completely. That means no agriculture, no forestry, no diverting rivers for hydroelectric power staions, no cities. But thats highly improbable, even to the most retarded hardline feral.
If we are going to live here, then we need to realise that we are going to have an impact, no matter what we do. Its a matter of making our use of the resources that are available to us sustainable, so that "nature" can effectively deal with catastrophic events like drought or flood, or a plague of locusts. These aren't anything new to the Australian environment, but our inappropiate use of the resources we have increase the pressure on the landscape to such an extent that the ecosystems are less able to deal with them.
David Attenborough - The Life of MammalsBut although denying that we have a special position in the natural world might seem becomingly modest in the eye of eternity, it might also be used as an excuse for evading our responsibilities. The fact is that no species has ever had such wholesale control over everything on earth, living or dead, as we now have. That lays upon us, whether we like it or not, an awesome responsibility. In our hands now lies not only our own future, but that of all living creatures with whom we share the earth.

Oh, and Penfold's leg is in a trap, but its a soft-jaw trap. (No animals were harmed in the making of these pictures)

A4 is a standard piece of paper (210 x 297). I've tried resizing but I lose the detail.Originally Posted by Jennifer
